How to play

  1. Mark one or two small gates with cones between midfield and the goal.
  2. Start each wave with attackers building from behind the gate.
  3. The attacking side must complete a pass through a gate before shooting.
  4. After the gate pass, the attack has a short shot clock or limited touches to finish.
  5. Defenders can win the ball and counter through the gate for their own attempt.
  6. Rotate attackers and defenders every wave or after each goal.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Gate-Pass Transition Wave: pass through a marked gate before attacking goal. Gate pass plus goal scores. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: gate pass plus goal = 1 point. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: gate pass plus goal = 1 point. Timed mode: play a 15-30 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: teams alternate 5 attacking waves and compare totals.

Variations

Make it easier

Use a wider gate and remove the shot clock.

Make it harder

Require a one-touch gate pass or finish within 8 seconds after the gate.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Soccer Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation first. STUD mode is optional and the activity works without it.

Why it works

The gate gives every possession one clear trigger, so passing, timing, and finishing all matter in the same short wave.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
