How to play

  1. Set a short croquet route with 5 gates and a clear finish mark.
  2. Players take turns striking their own ball through the route in order.
  3. A ball must pass fully through the current gate before the player moves to the next one.
  4. Before a turn, a player may call a tight gate attempt; clearing it cleanly lets them skip the next gate.
  5. Players should walk between shots and keep everyone outside the stroke path.
  6. First player through the route and back to the finish mark wins.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Croquet Gate Sprint: clear 5 gates in order. A clean called tight gate skips the next gate. First through and back wins. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: first player to complete the route wins. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: first player to complete the route wins. Timed mode: farthest legal progress after 10 minutes wins. Group mode: partners alternate strokes and share one ball through the route.

Variations

Make it easier

Use wider gate spacing and remove the skip-gate call.

Make it harder

Require the called tight gate to clear without touching either wicket.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Yard Games Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation first. STUD mode is optional and the activity works without it.

Why it works

It turns croquet into a visible short course, so the group gets a finish line without waiting through a long lawn match.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
