How to play

  1. Set the pallino and play a normal bocce end on a safe lawn or lane.
  2. Players throw in normal order and try to finish closest to the pallino.
  3. A legal throw that moves the pallino and leaves your team with the closest ball earns 1 bonus point.
  4. If the pallino is moved out of bounds, the bonus goes to the other side and the end resets from the agreed spot.
  5. Normal bocce scoring still applies after all balls are thrown.
  6. Play to 7 points or complete 6 ends and compare totals.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Pallino Move Bonus: normal bocce, plus 1 bonus point for a legal pallino move that leaves your team closest. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: legal pallino move plus closest ball earns 1 bonus point. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: legal pallino move plus closest ball earns 1 bonus point. Timed mode: play a 15-40 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: partners alternate throws and share one score.

Variations

Make it easier

Count any legal pallino move that keeps the ball in play as the bonus.

Make it harder

The moved pallino must finish within one step of a called target zone for the bonus to count.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Yard Games Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation first. STUD mode is optional and the activity works without it.

Why it works

It adds a clear strategic moment to bocce, making soft touch and smart angles matter as much as being closest.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
