How to play

  1. Set up a washer box or safe cup target on a clear throwing lane.
  2. Mark 3 to 5 throwing distances with tape, cones, or chalk.
  3. Every player starts at the closest mark and throws the same number of washers per turn.
  4. A clean washer in the cup moves that player one distance farther back.
  5. A rim bounce lets the player retry once from the same distance if the group wants a forgiving round.
  6. The farthest completed distance after the agreed turns wins, or the first player to clear every mark wins.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Washer Cup Ladder: cup hit moves you back one distance. Farthest completed mark or first through the ladder wins. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: first player to clear every distance wins. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: first player to clear every distance wins. Timed mode: play a 15-40 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: partners alternate throws and share one ladder position.

Variations

Make it easier

Use fewer distances or count washers that land in the box as half-step progress.

Make it harder

Require two clean cup hits at the final distance before the player wins.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Yard Games Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation first. STUD mode is optional and the activity works without it.

Why it works

The distance ladder makes every throw feel like progress and keeps newer players close enough to stay involved.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
