How to play

  1. Pick a safe loop, track, or park path with predictable footing and no traffic crossings.
  2. Each player calls a recovery pace or easy-effort target before starting.
  3. Watches and phones stay hidden after the start; no blindfolds, blocked vision, or unsafe restrictions.
  4. Players run or walk the loop at controlled recovery effort.
  5. At the finish, compare the called pace to the actual pace or agreed time window.
  6. Closest recovery match wins; anyone who surges beyond the agreed easy effort is out of the round scoring.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Blind Recovery Pace: call an easy target, hide watch checks, finish one safe loop closest to the target. No blindfolds. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: smallest difference from the called recovery pace wins. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: smallest difference from the called recovery pace wins. Timed mode: play a 15-40 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: pair runners and add both pace differences together.

  • Team mode: pair runners and add both pace differences together.

Variations

Make it easier

Use a walk version, a larger target window, or let newer runners check pace once halfway.

Make it harder

Require the whole loop to stay no-watch and add a bonus for the smoothest final quarter.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Run Club Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation first. STUD mode is optional and the activity works without it.

Why it works

It turns an easy recovery loop into a low-pressure skill game and keeps the group from racing every run.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
