How to play

  1. Pick a safe park path, track edge, or neighborhood route with 3 to 5 visible landmarks and no risky road crossings.
  2. Split into teams and agree on a controlled tempo, jog, walk, or mixed-pace format before starting.
  3. Each teammate moves from one landmark to the next and tags the next teammate with a clear handoff.
  4. Teams must hold the agreed tempo between landmarks; unsafe surges, blocked paths, or shortcut attempts require a restart from the last landmark.
  5. Each team gets one pace-check reset to slow the round down before the final leg.
  6. Fastest clean team wins, or closest team to its called total time wins if the group wants a pacing format.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Landmark Tempo Tag: safe landmarks, teammate tags, controlled tempo. Fastest clean team or closest called time wins. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: fastest team that keeps the agreed tempo wins. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: fastest team that keeps the agreed tempo wins. Timed mode: play a 15-40 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: fastest team that keeps the agreed tempo wins.

Scoring options

  • Clean-tempo mode: fastest team that keeps the agreed tempo wins.
  • Called-time mode: each team calls a total time before starting; closest clean finish wins.
  • Walk-run mode: score 1 point per clean landmark exchange and use time only as a tiebreaker.

Variations

Make it easier

Use a walk version, fewer landmarks, or let the whole team move together between tags.

Make it harder

Remove the pace-check reset or require each runner to call the next landmark before leaving.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Run Club Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation first. STUD mode is optional and the activity works without it.

Why it works

Landmarks make the route easy to understand, while tempo rules keep the group focused on smooth teamwork instead of raw speed.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
