How to play

  1. Choose a safe loop, track lane, or out-and-back path with room for the group to move without crowding.
  2. Pick one song-length timer or set a 3 to 5 minute segment without relying on lyrics or copyrighted prompts.
  3. Each player calls a target pace or effort before the segment starts.
  4. Players run or walk the segment steadily without checking pace after the first minute.
  5. At the finish, compare the called target to the actual split or group-agreed effort.
  6. Closest match wins the round; use a walk version or effort target for mixed-pace groups.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Song-Length Pace Lock: call a pace or effort, hold it for one song-length safe segment, closest match wins. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: smallest difference from the called target wins. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: smallest difference from the called target wins. Timed mode: play a 15-40 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: pair runners and add both pace differences together.

Variations

Make it easier

Use an easy effort target, a walk version, or let everyone check pace halfway.

Make it harder

Run two song-length rounds with the second segment slightly faster by feel.

Why it works

A short music-length window gives the game a natural start and stop while teaching runners to feel pace without staring at a watch.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.
