How to play

  1. Pick a safe short loop or out-and-back path with enough room for the group to move together.
  2. Choose 3 pace levels: easy conversation, short-sentence effort, and quiet steady effort.
  3. Run or walk the first round at easy conversation pace where everyone can speak comfortably.
  4. After each round, step the pace up one level only if the group agrees it still feels safe and controlled.
  5. No one checks watches during the final segment; the goal is matching the agreed feel.
  6. The cleanest ladder goes to the group or pair that completes the levels with the most consistent spacing and no unsafe surges.

What counts?

A result counts when it matches the main rule: Talk-Test Pace Ladder: safe loop, 3 controlled effort levels, no final-segment watch checks. Keep it social and steady. Use this scoring agreement for close calls: the whole group wins if all 3 levels stay controlled and together. Do not count attempts that break the setup, happen outside the agreed space, or depend on a call the group cannot agree on.

How to win

Quick mode: the whole group wins if all 3 levels stay controlled and together. Timed mode: play a 15-40 min round and count the score when time expires. Group mode: rotate after each round so every player or team gets the same number of turns.

Scoring options

  • Group mode: the whole group wins if all 3 levels stay controlled and together.
  • Pair mode: pairs score 1 point for each level they finish at the agreed feel.
  • Consistency mode: compare loop times after the finish and reward the smoothest step-up pattern.

Variations

Make it easier

Use 2 pace levels, make every segment walk-friendly, or let the group repeat the easy round.

Make it harder

Add a fourth controlled level or hide watches for the whole ladder.

Game mode setup

Use this as the main activity from Run Club Board. Play for points, bragging rights, or simple rotation. This activity is for points or bragging rights only. STUD mode is not recommended for this format.

Why it works

It gives mixed-pace groups a shared language for effort, so the game stays social instead of becoming a race.

Safety / fair play

Use a safe space, avoid hard contact or unsafe surfaces, adjust for age and skill, and agree on close calls before the round starts.

STUD status

This activity is for points or bragging rights only. STUD mode is not recommended for this format.
