Couch stretch / 90/90
Also known as
couch stretch · 90/90 · hip flexor stretch · 90 90 hip
Community talk may be wrong. Not medical, training, or diet advice. Sharp pain, fainting, or disordered-eating concerns need a clinician.
In brief
The couch stretch and 90/90 are two different hip-mobility positions: a supported kneeling stretch and a seated position with the legs bent to either side.
People discuss them around desk time, squatting and mobility practice, with variations in support, position and which parts feel restricted.
Good to know. Stretching cold as the whole workout. Forcing a painful end range. Stretching instead of lifting.
What people say
- The job: Hips that will let the next squat and the next walk happen.
- r/flexibility and r/bodyweightfitness still name these two first.
- Kelly Starrett / MWOD made couch stretch a household shape.
- Why it’s loud: desk hips. Everyone has a review.
- Why it fails: they bounce, they force, they do it instead of training.
- Pain vs stretch: a 4/10 stretch is the diary. A sharp pinch is a stop.
- 90/90 is the “I cannot sit on the floor” on-ramp.
- Lifters who skip this then blame the program for cranky hip flexors.
- Runners / 12-3-30 people meet couch stretch after the calf-and-hip week.
- Self ten-minute-mobility is the habit. This is the named shapes.
- It will not “unlock” a body in 11 minutes on TikTok.
How people do it
- After the session or in the evening, not as a cold opener unless they move first.
- Couch stretch: pad the knee, squeeze the glute, stay tall.
- 90/90: sit, lean a little, switch sides, do not wrench the knee.
- Breathe. If they cannot breathe, they backed out.
- They pair it with a lift or a walk so it has a job.
- They do not add 15 other stretches from a random reel the same night.
- If a hip pinches: they shrink the range or they see a person.
Amounts people use
- Time: 60–180 seconds a side, 1–2 rounds.
- Days: most training days, or 10 minutes most evenings.
- Pain scale talk: stretch yes, sharp no.
- Warm first: a walk or the lifting warmup.
- That is the whole session on a rest day if they want. Still not a program.
How people keep it
- A patch of floor that is already clear.
- After they take shoes off — the habit hook.
- A show or a timer so they stay.
- They pick these two and ignore the circus for a month.
- A pillow for the back knee. Comfort is compliance.
How it may feel
- First couch stretch: dramatic. They think something is wrong. Usually it is just a hip flexor.
- After a week: they can stand taller after a desk day.
- Forced end range: they are worse the next morning.
- 90/90: one side is a person, the other is a board. Normal.
- The good version: slightly bored, slightly looser, they lift tomorrow.
- The bad version: stretching becomes the identity and the squat disappears.
How long
- As long as they sit and lift.
- A 2-week experiment is enough to know if it helps their squat week.
- It is maintenance, not a destination split.
- After a long travel day: extra, not a punishment.
The longer notes
- Static stretching cold is the line wikis still discourage as a power warmup.
- Ten-minute mobility is the family. These are the two named drills.
- Reformer / Pilates can own more flow. Different card.
- PT-prescribed work beats Reddit if something is actually injured.
- You cannot stretch your way out of never lifting.
More from the community
A recognizable position does not describe everyone’s experience of it. In a June 2026 flexibility thread, someone trying 90/90 reported knee discomfort even after raising their seat on a block. Replies discussed other positions rather than simply making the same shape deeper. The useful distinction is between learning what a drill looks like and finding out whether that particular setup is workable for the person describing it. This account does not establish the cause of the discomfort, or turn a comment-thread alternative into an injury treatment.Source 1
Good to know
- Do not static-stretch cold as the whole workout.
- Do not force a painful end range.
- Stretching is not a replacement for lifting.
- Numbness, sharp pinch, or pain down a leg: a person, not a deeper couch stretch.
- Eleven-minute “unlock your hips” videos are content.
