PURPOSE · 2 MIN READ
Give your ambition a good purpose.
Choose a future worth working for—and be clear about why it matters.
You may want to qualify for better work, create something people use, raise a family well or bring an idea to life. Those are reasons to take your abilities seriously. There is room for ambition that improves your life and contributes to someone else’s.
Begin by asking what you want the achievement to make possible.
Give the goal a real reason.
Imagine wanting a professional qualification. The certificate is a milestone. The purpose might be to do more capable work, support your household and have more choice about your future. That reason can help you decide which course is worth the time and what support you will need.
A useful goal describes a change you can recognize. “Become successful” leaves too much unanswered. “Complete the training needed to apply for this role” gives you something to investigate and work toward.
Choose a direction you can stand behind.
Ask whether you value the work attached to the result, how it affects your responsibilities and whether the way you pursue it treats people well. Enjoyment and creativity count, too. Every interest does not need to become a career or a public service.
You will not control every opportunity or outcome. You can still make a thoughtful choice about what deserves your effort. Find the first meaningful milestone, check what it requires and begin building toward it. A good purpose gives you a reason to learn through the difficult parts.
