On the lawn / Your play guide

Mölkky

The pins spread out as you play, so the best target changes every turn. One fallen pin scores its number; several score only how many fell. Plan the last throw carefully: exceeding 50 sends your total back to 25.

The quick version

Take one throw per turn in a fixed order. Stand fallen pins where they landed. First to exactly 50 wins immediately. Three consecutive scoreless throws eliminate a player; if only one player remains, that player wins.

Arrange the numbered cluster

Use a level open patch with room for pins to scatter. Put a throwing line 3.5 meters from the front of the cluster. Arrange touching pins in four rows, read left to right from the thrower: front row 1, 2; next 3, 10, 4; next 5, 11, 12, 6; back row 7, 9, 8. Face the numbers toward the throwers.

Choose a fixed player order by a draw or coin flip followed by an agreed rotation. Everyone begins at zero. The suggested two-to-eight group keeps a singles game manageable; the rules are not an eight-person limit. Give each player a score line and a consecutive-miss box.

The line stays fixed while the pins move. For this lawn game, use underarm throws and remain behind the line until the throwing skittle lands. Wait for everyone to clear the target area before releasing.

Throw, count and reach exactly 50

Take one attempt

Throw the larger unnumbered skittle at the numbered pins. A bounce can still knock them down. A pin lying fully on the ground counts; one leaning on another pin, the throwing skittle or a natural obstacle does not. Let everything stop before counting.

Choose number or count

Exactly one fallen pin scores its printed number: only pin 12 down earns 12. Two or more fallen pins score their count, not their numbers: pins 12 and 11 together earn 2. No fallen pins means zero and one consecutive miss. A scoring throw clears the miss count.

Leave the spread in place

Record the score before lifting anything. Stand each fallen pin upright where it finished, with its number facing the throwing line. Do not return it to the starting cluster. Keep standing pins where they are, retrieve the throwing skittle and pass it to the next active player.

Finish or take the setback

Reaching exactly 50 ends the game immediately, with no equal-turn reply. Exceeding 50 changes your total to 25: at 44, knocking down only pin 8 gives the setback. Three consecutive scoreless throws eliminate you; skip your later turns. If just one player remains, that player wins without needing 50. The underarm and line rules in this guide are house rules; a violation spends the throw, scores zero and restores moved pins.

Near the finish

At 47 you need 3: either knock down only pin 3, or knock down exactly three pins. Hitting pin 3 and one more pin scores 2, leaving you on 49. Name the target before throwing if it helps you think; calling it does not normally change the score.

Track misses separately from scores

Write each new total and miss streak beside the player's name. A zero does not reset the score, and scoring clears only the miss streak. Keep the score sheet near the line so the thrower can choose the points needed.

Use enough open space that the growing spread remains playable. If a pin reaches a path or obstruction, pause and agree a house reposition before the next throw; do not invent points for crossing an edge. After a game, gather all twelve pins, rebuild the original cluster and choose the next game's order.

Suggested house variation

Everyone stays in

Remove elimination for three misses. A miss still scores zero, but every player keeps their place in the order. Keep exactly 50 and the reset to 25 for overshooting. The first exact-50 throw ends the game; this helps a mixed-experience group stay together throughout.

Suggested house variation

Called single

Before every throw, name one numbered pin. Score only if that pin alone falls; earn its printed number. Every other result is zero and counts as a miss. Keep the normal three-miss elimination, exact 50 and over-50 reset to 25. This changes the game into a single-pin accuracy contest; it replaces normal cluster scoring rather than adding a bonus.

About this guide

The manufacturer confirms basic scoring, exact 50, overshoot reset and three-miss elimination. Mölkky World's detailed rules supply placement, distance, fallen-pin definition and last-survivor finish; it describes these as association consensus, rather than one universally binding tournament code. Underarm throws, line-fault handling and both variations are stated house choices.

STUD Sportsmanship

All challenges, rule calls, scoring decisions, and outcomes should be handled in good faith. If a challenge is phrased unclearly or leaves out a detail that later becomes relevant, resolve it according to the original intent of the group and the fair spirit of the activity, not by exploiting loopholes or technical wording. If an unforeseen circumstance, ambiguity, or disputed dynamic arises, participants should work together respectfully to reach the fairest interpretation. Where no agreement can be reached, the matter should be decided by the group, event host, or an agreed neutral third party.
