For the season / Your play guide

Fantasy football snake draft

A snake draft builds each team's roster one pick at a time. The last manager in one round picks first in the next. Once the draft ends, real NFL performances supply points for your chosen starters in weekly matchups.

The quick version

Use 8, 10 or 12 teams in a private ESPN head-to-head league. Randomize the order before starting, fill every roster by reversing each round, then manage weekly starters through the championship. The draft alone does not produce a winner.

Agree the season before picking

Choose a commissioner and one manager per team. Select a live snake draft, fresh rosters with no keepers, and a date everyone can attend. Invite every manager and check that all teams have joined.

Suggested house roster: one quarterback, two running backs, two receivers, one tight end, one FLEX for a running back/receiver/tight end, and five bench players: 12 picks per team. Use decimal scoring: one point per 25 passing yards, four per passing touchdown, minus two per interception thrown; one per 10 rushing/receiving yards, six per rushing/receiving touchdown, one per reception, two per successful passing/rushing/receiving two-point conversion, minus two per lost fumble. Set all unlisted scoring categories to zero.

Suggested schedule: NFL Weeks 1–13 regular season, four-team semifinals in Weeks 14–15 and final in Weeks 16–17. Publish the standings tiebreaker, waiver order and trade-review rules shown in settings. Regular-season tied scores remain ties; playoff tied scores advance the higher seed. Confirm settings before drafting.

Set a pick clock the group can manage. Share the finalized draft order beforehand. Each manager prepares rankings and several alternatives at needed positions; a favorite may disappear just before their turn.

Pick, manage and finish

Make the first pick

The first manager chooses one available player in the draft room and confirms the selection. That player joins their roster and leaves the available pool. Continue through the posted order. There are no bids and nobody can draft a player already taken.

Reverse at the end

With ten teams, round one goes 1 through 10; round two goes 10 through 1; round three goes 1 through 10 again. The managers at either end therefore make two adjacent picks at the turn. Repeat until each team has all 12 players in this format.

Use the clock and queue

Check your remaining roster needs before confirming each pick. Use the platform's saved rankings and queue so it has sensible choices if you disconnect or miss a turn. ESPN says saved draft lists are used when disconnected. Do not assume a shouted player name reserves them; the recorded selection controls.

Set starters each week

Put eligible players into the seven starting places before their displayed lock times; the bench does not count toward the matchup. Plan around injuries and NFL bye weeks. Add an available replacement through your league's waiver process, dropping someone if full, or propose a trade under the published policy.

Decide the title

Real-game statistics become fantasy points under your settings. The greater finalized starting total wins each weekly matchup. Standings and tiebreakers set the playoff seeds; playoff winners advance to the final. The championship result decides the champion. After the season, retain the results and redraft from scratch for a new season.

Help first-time managers follow the board

Demonstrate one mock pick and locate it on the roster. Explain FLEX and starter eligibility. A bye means a player's NFL team has no game that week; plan an active replacement.

Agree how to handle disconnects using available controls. Recheck the clock on draft day. Reserve an evening; preparation and platform pace affect length.

Ideas & Twists

Choose a variation together before you start.

Half-point receptions

Set receptions to 0.5 points before the draft instead of one, keeping every other scoring category unchanged. Six catches now add three reception points, so managers value players differently when picking. Weekly matchups and the playoff championship retain the same finish and tie rules.

Superflex roster

Before drafting, replace the existing FLEX with a slot accepting a quarterback as well as a running back, receiver or tight end. Keep 12 total roster places and the same scoring. Managers may start two quarterbacks, making draft depth and bye-week planning more demanding. Weekly results and playoff advancement still use starter totals, with the final deciding the champion. Confirm the platform's slot configuration first.

About this guide

This guide uses ESPN's reversing draft order and saved player rankings. Roster, scoring and schedule are suggested house settings; confirm them in your league configuration. A season includes weekly decisions after draft night, and available controls depend on your league settings.

STUD Sportsmanship

All challenges, rule calls, scoring decisions, and outcomes should be handled in good faith. If a challenge is phrased unclearly or leaves out a detail that later becomes relevant, resolve it according to the original intent of the group and the fair spirit of the activity, not by exploiting loopholes or technical wording. If an unforeseen circumstance, ambiguity, or disputed dynamic arises, participants should work together respectfully to reach the fairest interpretation. Where no agreement can be reached, the matter should be decided by the group, event host, or an agreed neutral third party.
