Word on the Street

A long word is useful only if it pulls the right letters. Teams have half a minute to find a category answer, commit to it and spell it while moving tiles across the street. Repeated letters can turn a close contest around. This guide keeps the published word tug-of-war and uses a simpler house procedure for disputes.

The quick version

Put all letters on the middle lane and form two teams. Alternate 30-second turns: read a category, agree one word and spell it aloud, pulling each available letter one space for every occurrence. Stop moving when time ends. A tile pulled off your edge is yours permanently. First team to capture eight tiles wins.

Face each other across the street

Place each of the 17 tiles on its matching middle-lane space. Split 2–10 players into two teams, as evenly as possible, on opposite sides. Choose the green category side for a first game or blue for a harder one. Agree that one person handles the tiles each turn; rotate that job within each team.

Use a single English word fitting the category, including proper names and correctly used singular, plural or tense forms. Closed compound words are allowed; a multiword phrase is not. A hyphen is allowed only within a name. Screen categories beforehand and replace any unsuitable card before starting its timer.

Find the word, then pull its letters

Draw and read the category as the other team starts 30 seconds. Brainstorm together. Announce the chosen word, then spell it aloud in order while the designated mover pulls the corresponding tiles one space toward the team. Each repeated occurrence pulls again. Letters absent from the board or already captured cause no movement.

The word is locked once the first tile moves. At the bell stop immediately, even mid-spelling. A tile crossing your outside edge is captured and cannot return. If a word contains two of a needed consonant, it can pull that tile twice; a word with many vowels might pull very little.

This guide’s house dispute rule replaces the publisher’s challenge penalties: before the next card, check any disputed spelling in the agreed dictionary and decide category fit by majority vote of all players. A tie rejects the word. An invalid word restores every tile moved that turn; an accepted word keeps its moves. No extra turn is lost for asking. Then the other team plays.

The first team with eight captured tiles wins after any immediate dispute is resolved. If the category deck runs out first, reshuffle its used cards. One capture race completes the game.

Make the decision together

Let teammates suggest before the mover commits. For a calmer introduction, the waiting team stays quiet during brainstorming; this is a house choice that leaves out the published distraction option. Teams may ask to pause between turns for a rules explanation, but the active timer measures thinking and movement together.

One speaker

Choose a new captain each turn. Teammates may offer suggestions, but only the captain announces the final word and its spelling; another teammate may move tiles. This reduces competing commitments without changing the clock.

Longer street turn

Use 60 seconds instead of 30 for every turn. Both brainstorming and tile movement must still finish inside that limit. Keep eight captures as the goal.

No repeated answer

Keep a written list of accepted words. A word already used this game cannot be played again, even for a different category. If repetition is noticed before the next turn, restore its moves and end that turn.

Six-letter ceiling

Every answer must contain at most six letters, counting letters in proper names too. The normal category and spelling rules still apply. Reject an overlong choice under the house dispute procedure.

Ten turns each

Instead of racing to eight, give each team ten turns. If one captures eight earlier, finish the current pair of turns so both have equal opportunities, then stop. Most captured tiles wins; ties are shared. Record turns on paper.

About this guide

The board, 17 letters, timed movement and eight-tile goal follow the original rules. Quiet opposition, simplified disputes and all five twists are explicitly house choices.

STUD Sportsmanship

All challenges, rule calls, scoring decisions, and outcomes should be handled in good faith. If a challenge is phrased unclearly or leaves out a detail that later becomes relevant, resolve it according to the original intent of the group and the fair spirit of the activity, not by exploiting loopholes or technical wording. If an unforeseen circumstance, ambiguity, or disputed dynamic arises, participants should work together respectfully to reach the fairest interpretation. Where no agreement can be reached, the matter should be decided by the group, event host, or an agreed neutral third party.
