Arginine, usually called L-arginine on supplements, is discussed for workout pumps, visible veins and erection quality. Some users prefer its feel to citrulline; others notice little or run into stomach or mood problems. These experiences do not establish improved performance or safety.
What arginine is
- An amino acid with a blood-flow connection. Arginine is a building block of proteins found in food and made by the body. Some becomes nitric oxide, a signal that relaxes blood vessels; that mechanism explains the interest without guaranteeing a noticeable pump. Official context
- L-arginine, AAKG and a blend are different labels. AAKG means arginine alpha-ketoglutarate; an AAKG product amount is not automatically the same amount of L-arginine. Oral single-ingredient reports also cannot establish what an injectable multi-ingredient blend does. Personal report Official context Official context
- Citrulline and agmatine remain separate comparisons. The body can make arginine from citrulline, but their reported amounts and effects are not interchangeable. Agmatine appears as another pump comparison in replies; a good or bad agmatine experience is not an arginine result. Official context Reddit
What people report
- A stronger workout pump for some. One lifter preferred arginine after experimenting with it and citrulline over six months. A different contributor found no noticeable pump from AAKG, so even closely related product discussions contain nonresponse. Reddit Personal report
- Erection changes, often with other help. A forum user with diabetes described partial erection improvement alongside mechanical aids. Another noticed changes during a sexual-health stack; neither account isolates arginine or demonstrates permanent enlargement. The BioHacker
- An energy lift can become an unwanted effect. One commenter describes a quick lift; the mood-report author describes an initially intense, fearless feeling followed later by anxiety. These are subjective experiences, not evidence that arginine is a reliable stimulant. Personal report
Doses people discuss
Reported oral amounts only, not a regimen. One gram (g) equals 1,000 milligrams (mg); per-use amounts and daily totals are kept separate.
- 1 g daily; a separate 1–3 g per-use report. The mood-report author describes oral L-arginine on an empty stomach every day. A commenter gives 1–3 g per use without specifying daily frequency; these are separate accounts, not an agreed starting range. Personal report
- 5 g in one workout comparison. The lifter reports using this amount that week and preferring it to 10 g citrulline. Another person’s unsuccessful 5 g trial used AAKG, so those two amounts should not be treated as equivalent L-arginine doses. Reddit Personal report
- 20 g/day is a high outlier, not a target. One commenter reports six-week courses at that daily total. The thread supplies no clinical monitoring or proof of safety, and this isolated figure does not define usual use. Reddit
Half-life
- About 1.5 hours is a circulated claim. A citrulline discussion repeats that figure specifically for arginine, without a clear route, dose or primary origin in the inspected text. It is not a measured duration of a workout pump; the separate human study below supplies a defined research context. Reddit
When people notice a change
- About 30 minutes for one energy report. That is when the mood-report author says the intense feeling began after L-arginine. It is an adverse-experience timeline, not a reliable pre-workout onset. Personal report
- Sexual-effect reports use different clocks. One forum user took 5 g about three hours beforehand; another noticed changes after two days of stacked use. Scheduling a dose ahead of an activity does not measure when its effect first begins. The BioHacker
How long effects seem to last
- A shorter burst than citrulline, without a dependable hour count. A commenter uses that comparison in both the workout and mood threads. It remains one person’s impression; these reports do not establish an all-day pump, an exact wear-off time or a repeat-dose interval. Reddit Personal report
Courses, breaks and stopping
- Daily use and occasional use both appear. The mood-report author used 1 g/day for three months; a separate forum contributor describes 3–4 uses per week for three months. Neither establishes a standard cycle. Personal report The BioHacker
- Tolerance and breaks are disputed. The mood-report author reports a change after 2–3 weeks and feeling worse after stopping. A five-year forum user reported retained benefit with incidental breaks; their suggestion of a month off came from something they had read, not a tested schedule. Personal report The BioHacker
- A six-week course is one person’s practice. The high-dose commenter describes repeated courses and an intention to continue longer. There is no agreed off-period or demonstrated tolerance reset in that report. Reddit
What to watch for
- Stomach trouble can outweigh the desired effect. A forum contributor describes diarrhea at 6 g or more. NIH ODS and Mayo Clinic also discuss gastrointestinal upset; an amount tolerated by one person is not a safety threshold for someone else. The BioHacker Official context Official context
- Blood-pressure combinations matter. Mayo Clinic flags possible excessive lowering with blood-pressure medicines, nitrates and sildenafil. Its guidance also lists bleeding, blood-sugar and potassium concerns with relevant medicines; these combinations need a clinician or pharmacist’s review. Official context
- Recent heart attack is a specific serious caution. In VINTAGE MI, six participants assigned arginine died versus none assigned placebo, and enrollment was closed. That trial involved people after a heart attack; it is not a risk estimate for healthy lifters. Official context
- Cold sores and mood changes are reported, without a proven cause here. One commenter links cold sores to more than 1,000 mg/day for several days; that personal pattern is not a safe cutoff. The mood-report author describes hypomania-like feelings, anxiety and depression, while replies dispute causation and ask about other ingredients. Reddit Personal report
- Allergies and asthma belong in the safety picture. Mayo Clinic warns that arginine can worsen these conditions and lists headache and allergic reactions among possible adverse effects. Forum success stories cannot rule out those problems. Official context
What the human research adds
- Measured oral half-life: about 80 minutes in one small study. The 1998 Bode-Böger study abstract reports 79.5 ± 9.3 minutes, with an individual range of 50–121 minutes, after a single oral 6 g dose in eight healthy men. This is plasma elimination, not felt duration or a result for every formulation. Official context
- Absorption is not the same as a workout benefit. That study measured oral absorption but found no significant blood-pressure or peripheral-resistance change with oral 6 g. NIH ODS describes limited and conflicting performance evidence; a fuller-feeling muscle does not by itself demonstrate growth, strength or recovery. Official context Official context
- AAKG research is mixed and formulation-specific. A small 2006 controlled study in trained men reported improvements in bench-press maximum and peak power, but not body composition or aerobic capacity. That result concerns AAKG and cannot settle the effects of plain arginine or explain every user’s pump. Official context
What the mixed experiences add
- “Better than citrulline” means better for that reporter. The lifter’s preference conflicts with an AAKG nonresponder’s preference for citrulline. Different forms, unblinded expectations and changing workouts prevent a clean head-to-head conclusion. Reddit Personal report
- Food arguments go beyond what the accounts can show. Some contributors favor taking isolated arginine away from protein, while the AAKG nonresponder noticed no pump either with food or without it. Those observations do not settle absorption or establish an empty-stomach rule. Reddit Personal report
- “Destroyed by digestion” is too absolute. A question thread repeats that claim, but the human study measured arginine reaching the blood after oral use. That corrects the all-or-nothing explanation without turning enthusiastic replies into proof of performance benefits. Reddit Official context
- Stacks explain some of the uncertainty. Sexual-health routines and combined citrulline/arginine use can produce reports of better erections or stamina without identifying which ingredient mattered. Oral experiences do not validate an injectable supplier blend or isolate the contribution of arginine within it. The BioHacker Reddit Official context
