Citrulline is an amino acid people discuss for fuller workout pumps, less fading during exercise and better erections. Oral reports range from noticeable changes to no benefit, and stomach symptoms or palpitations sometimes prompt people to stop. Pure L-citrulline and citrulline malate need different amount comparisons.

What citrulline is

  • L-citrulline is the standalone amino acid. The body can convert it to arginine, which feeds nitric-oxide production. That explains the blood-flow interest; a plausible pathway does not guarantee a visible pump or better performance. Official context
  • Citrulline malate includes another ingredient. Malate refers to malic acid. A scoop’s total mass therefore differs from its citrulline content; “CM,” “1:1” and “2:1” discussions can describe different preparations. Official context Personal report
  • Kimera blends are a separate identity question. Kimera’s MNT (PMP) page lists citrulline alongside several other ingredients in a laboratory research solution. Those vendor statements establish neither an injectable benefit nor equivalence to the oral supplements discussed here. Official context

What people hope to notice

  • Less fading during exercise. A cyclist describes less fading near the end of rides. This is a perceived change, not evidence of muscle growth or a predictable improvement every session. Reddit
  • Erection effects can differ from gym effects. One commenter reports better erection quality despite no workout benefit, alongside nasal congestion. A response in one setting does not predict the other. Reddit

The comparisons that matter

  • Pure versus malate belongs in the same discussion. One form-switching author preferred a self-described 1:1 malate product despite expecting pure citrulline to work better. Different days, products and amounts prevent that story from proving malate superiority. Personal report
  • Arginine and creatine have different roles. Arginine is the downstream amino acid in the nitric-oxide explanation; creatine supports rapid energy supply through a different system. Combining them in pre-workout discussions does not make their amounts or expected effects interchangeable. Official context Reddit
  • Agmatine comparisons remain subjective. In a blood-flow thread, one person suggests agmatine is stronger; another who says they used both favors citrulline for vasodilation and describes broader mood effects from agmatine. Neither is a controlled comparison. Reddit

Doses people discuss

All amounts here describe oral community reports or advice circulating in replies. One gram (g) equals 1,000 milligrams (mg); a per-workout amount is not automatically a daily total.

  • Oral reports: 2 g and 3–5 g; replies advocate 4 g or 6–8 g. The 2 g product was labeled L-citrulline and taken with creatine; the 3–5 g lifter’s form is unspecified. Reply amounts are disputed advice, not a universal threshold. Reddit Reddit
  • Malate: around 6 g per ride in one account. That cyclist does not specify a ratio. In another thread, 9 g of 2:1 malate is discussed as 6 g citrulline: the arithmetic is correct only if 2:1 means a citrulline-to-malate mass ratio and the label is accurate. Reddit Reddit
  • Large amounts still produced little effect in one form-switching report. The author tried pure citrulline at 6 g, 12 g and 18 g on separate occasions, reporting none or only a slight pump; their earlier malate amount was 20 g. These are an outlier’s reported amounts, not an escalation plan. Personal report

Half-life: claims about clearance

  • About 1 hour is a repeated estimate; 3–6 hours is also asserted. One Reddit reply cites an inaccessible FDA presentation; the longer claim has no study citation. Neither establishes a universal human range. Reddit Reddit
  • Half-life is not a pump timer. Knowing how quickly a concentration falls does not establish when a downstream effect ends. The thread’s question about wear-off never becomes a measured effect window. Reddit

Onset: when people notice something

  • Thirty minutes beforehand is a habit; 45 minutes is one felt onset. One lifter reports the former. Another notices an effect about 45 minutes into a run after taking citrulline at its start. Reddit
  • Twenty minutes beforehand did not ensure a response. That was that author’s timing for their first 6 g pure-citrulline attempt, with no perceived effect. Later higher-dose days also disappointed; the post does not establish a precise alternative onset. Personal report

Duration: how long a change lasts

  • A three-hour ride is one observation, not a three-hour guarantee. The malate user reports less fatigue toward the end of a typical ride. There is no timed wear-off measurement, placebo comparison or clear answer for a different amount or activity. Reddit
  • All-day coverage remains uncertain. The blood-flow thread’s author describes 2 g three times daily, totaling 6 g/day, while asking whether effects persist. Their schedule is not evidence that each portion supplies a fixed number of useful hours. Reddit

Cycles, breaks and stopping

  • Workout-day use and continuous use both appear. A person reporting a year of citrulline and maca without breaks asks about alternate-week cycling. Replies dispute that rule and distinguish taking something for a workout from a deliberate on/off cycle. Reddit
  • Perceived tolerance is confounded by co-use. Another author reports declining effects after over a year of daily tadalafil plus citrulline. Their citrulline amount is only “two scoops,” with no gram content; the story cannot isolate citrulline tolerance. Personal report
  • No supported reset interval emerges here. Days or weeks off are suggested in replies, but no successful citrulline-only stop-and-restart experiment is documented. Neither a long history of use nor a confident no-cycling reply proves indefinite safety. Reddit Personal report

What can change the decision

  • Stomach discomfort can limit use. One lifter reports burning above 5 g. NIH also records stomach discomfort and inadequate assessment of long-term safety. Reddit Official context
  • Palpitations deserve more than dose reassurance. One author reports painful irregular beats after 6,000 mg before exercise, then similar symptoms with lower amounts of both pure and malate products. This is one unverified adverse-event account, not a measured frequency or proven cause; current palpitations with chest pain or fainting warrant emergency medical assessment. Personal report Official context
  • Blood-pressure combinations need a medication check. The Drugs.com interaction reference flags possible additional blood-pressure lowering with tadalafil, including dizziness or fainting. This is a precaution from an interaction database, not a quantified risk estimate from a citrulline combination trial. Official context
  • A bigger scoop does not resolve uncertain contents. A trial’s chemical analysis found a different citrulline-to-malate ratio from the advertised claim. This establishes a problem with tested material, not every brand; the number printed on a label is not independent batch verification. Official context

What the community experiences add

  • No response can persist for months. One participant stopped after months without benefit; another reports no consistent gym or sexual change. Dose-chasing replies do not erase those outcomes. Reddit
  • Stacks make credit and blame harder. The no-pump beginner also used creatine. In the palpitations thread, another person lists citrulline, arginine, carnitine, creatine and other supplements, and says similar episodes had happened before. These are distinct contexts, not clean single-ingredient tests. Reddit Personal report
  • Form confusion changes what a report means. A pure-citrulline amount, a total malate amount and a count of scoops answer different questions. The half-life thread mixes a conversion question with stimulant-medication co-use; its requested wear-off time was never an observed duration. Reddit
  • “No cycling needed” and “it stopped working” can coexist. The first is advice in one discussion; the second is a report involving another drug. Neither settles whether citrulline itself develops tolerance or whether a break restores an effect. Reddit Personal report

What human research adds

These are formal study results, separate from the community amounts and timing above. The 2025 paper was inspected through its reproduced author abstract, not full text.

  • Measured blood timing is a separate clock. In eight healthy men given separate oral loads, the Citrudose study reported citrulline peaks around 42–56 minutes and return to baseline within 3–5 hours. Apparent elimination half-life increased with dose; these measurements do not determine when a workout benefit begins or ends. Official context
  • An acute trial found no performance gain. The 2018 crossover study had 15 completers and used 8 g of analyzed malate material containing about 4.21 g citrulline. Repetition and force results did not significantly improve, and soreness was greater under that particular exercise test. Official context
  • A longer trial gives a qualified positive result. The 2025 author abstract reports 33 trained men taking 8 g L-citrulline, 12 g malate or placebo daily with six weeks of training. Upper-body endurance changes favored both supplements, without a clear difference between forms; this was not a general strength improvement. Official context
