Community talk. May be wrong. Not medical advice. Not a protocol. Not for human or animal use.
Systemic oral dual 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor — serum and scalp DHT both fall hard.
The US BPH label and the profile’s most-copied off-label hair pattern use the same capsule amount.
A 24-week pilot compared twice- and thrice-weekly dutasteride with daily finasteride; community schedules and claims remain distinct from a label.
These are comparative research amounts; the highest arm is not presented as routine community use.
Topical concentration, volume and weekly milligrams are not interchangeable, and local use does not establish absence of systemic exposure.
Jalyn is a BPH product identity, not a hair-loss stack.

Half-life in the body
At steady state, dutasteride has a terminal half-life of about five weeks.
The AVODART label reports about 65% of steady-state concentration after one month and about 90% after three months; serum concentrations remain detectable for four to six months after stopping.
This pharmacokinetic clock does not measure scalp response, shedding, regrowth or the duration of an individual adverse effect.
- DailyMed — AVODART (dutasteride) capsule (opens in a new tab)Clinical Pharmacology: dual type-1/type-2 5-alpha-reductase inhibition; terminal half-life about 5 weeks at steady state; approximately 65% steady state after 1 month, 90% after 3 months, and detectable concentrations 4–6 months after discontinuation.BPH prescribing information; it does not establish hair-loss efficacy, a subjective-effect clock or safety for off-label scalp use.
Felt duration people report
No reliable dutasteride-specific felt-duration window was established from the inspected community material.
One same-author switch history described an extended shed, a recent three-month low point, then slowing shedding and new hairs around month 11; the author reported no sexual adverse effects.
The report combined prior finasteride, oral and topical minoxidil and microneedling. Hair-cycle observations do not measure drug clearance or prove dutasteride caused each change.
- Reddit r/tressless — 1 year long dutasteride shed finally working (opens in a new tab)Original post and same-author replies describe a finasteride-to-dutasteride switch, roughly 11 months of shedding or decline, a recent low point, then slowing shedding and new hairs; the author also reports oral and topical minoxidil, microneedling and no sexual adverse effects.Single uncontrolled self-report with multiple co-interventions, photographs and self-attribution; product identity, adherence and causal mechanism were not independently verified.

What people say
- Step-up after fin plateau: The dominant forum job — “fin held me, dut grew me.” Not everyone; a loud minority only gets sides. forum
- 2–3×/week low-dose talk: 2025 r/tressless posts claim 0.5 mg twice a week ≈ daily fin, three times a week a bit better than fin, daily as the max push. Used by people scared of daily sides. forum
- Photo-album density: Six-to-twelve-month dut + oral minox threads are some of the strongest “before/after” stacks on the board. Attribution is messy. forum
- Scalp DHT takes time: A 2024 switch thread argues scalp DHT may need 1–3 months, not a week, even if serum falls faster. Matches the “why did I shed for months after switching” story. forum
- Hair count vs fin (24-week class data): 0.5 mg daily beat 1 mg finasteride on hair count in the big Olsen-style AGA trial (917 men; dut 0.02 / 0.1 / 0.5 vs fin 1 mg vs placebo). That graph is the one r/tressless pastes. trial
- BPH / flow: Labeled 0.5 mg daily for enlarged prostate. Hair users sometimes notice easier nights as a side benefit. trial
Doses people talk about
- 2× / 3× a week: 0.5 mg Monday/Thursday, or three days a week — the 2025 “low-dose dut ≈ or > daily fin” meme. A July 2026 switch post warned a JAAD-style read might make 2×/week weaker than daily fin 1 mg. forum
- EOD 0.5 mg: Middle path for side-effect-shy switchers. forum
- Topical / meso: Compounded 0.05–0.1% and scalp injections are a separate identity fight — less serum talk, more “did I still get sides?” forum
- 2025–26 microdose read: The JAAD-style 2×/week arm was the weakest of the three. Forums that said “2×/week ≈ daily fin” got a colder chart; 3×/week is the “maybe ≥ fin” talking point, still a 60-person pilot. trialforum
- Topical weekly-mg talk: Hair blogs that try to keep systemic down discuss ~0.1–0.5 mg/week on the scalp (very dilute, long contact time) — not 1 mL of 0.1% daily. forum
- Higher (trial, not community default): 2.5 mg daily grew more hair than 0.5 mg in Olsen dose-finding and crushed scalp DHT harder (about 79% vs 51% in that paper’s scalp numbers) while serum DHT was already ~90%+ at 0.5 mg. Almost nobody on r/tressless lives at 2.5 mg. trial
- Micro / 0.1 mg arms: The 0.1 mg daily trial arm still beat placebo; used as a “is tiny dut enough?” talking point, not a common pharmacy split. trial
- Jalyn: Dut 0.5 + tamsulosin is a BPH combo, not a hair stack. trial
- Framing: Labeled BPH dose and off-label hair patterns — not a prescription. forum
- Labeled BPH: 0.5 mg oral once daily (Avodart capsule). trial
- Most-copied hair daily: Same 0.5 mg every day. That is also the East-Asian AGA label. trial
How it may feel
- Days 1–14: Many feel nothing. A minority get watery semen, softer morning wood, or a flat mood in the first weeks — same family as fin sides, sometimes louder. forum
- Weeks 2–8 switch shed: Jumping fin → dut often dumps hair for 1–3 months. Forums treat this as a known tax, not instant proof it failed. forum
- Months 1–3: Serum DHT is crushed early; scalp / photo change is slower. r/tressless reminder posts: dut “takes 1–3 months to work in the scalp.” forum
- Months 3–6: First honest album window. Some NW-scale posts in 2025 claim more people drop a grade on dut than on fin by six months — still observational internet data. forum
- Month 6+: Hair docs and long logs judge hold vs grow here. Sides that were going to show often already did; a few late sexual-side stories still appear. forum
- Missed pills: Because of the 5-week half-life, a 3-day miss is not a finasteride-style washout — but people still report a shed scare and argue about it. forum
- After you stop: DHT stays low for months. Hair usually slumps on a long delay, not next week. Sides can linger for the same reason — the PFS-fear fuel. forum
- 2× vs 3× vs daily fin (2025 JAAD International pilot): 0.5 mg twice weekly, thrice weekly, or fin 1 mg daily for 24 weeks (n=60). Terminal hair-count change ~+7.7 / +17.4 / +12.8 per cm². 3× beat 2× on density/diameter; 3× did not clearly beat daily fin on hair count. Sexual AEs similar. trial
- Meso “local” still systemic: A 2026 monthly-vs-quarterly mesotherapy comparison found modest density gains either way, plus ~23% serum DHT drop and ~18% free-PSA drop — not zero-blood. trial
- Paradoxical dump after meso: 2025 case series described nonscarring alopecia after a single intradermal dut session in a minority — the scare that sits next to “meso is safer than the pill.” trial
Around the dose
- Clock: Daily oral, same time is the adherence habit. 2–3×/week people pick named weekdays and do not “make up” a missed capsule with two at once. forum
- Hair habits: Months of consistency. Pairing with minoxidil is the album stack; neither is a one-week test. forum
- After: Don’t judge at day 10. Switch-shed is why people panic-quit in months 1–3. Same light, same angle, wait. forum
- Meso is not a weekend pulse. Clinic intradermal dut is monthly-to-quarterly, then photos — not a DIY BAC reconstitution. forum
- Oral ↔ topical / meso: Overlap talk exists. Cold-turkey oral drop while “just doing meso” is its own shed thread. forum
- Handling: Don’t pop leaking Avodart capsules on a bathroom counter pregnant people use. Blood-donation wait is 6 months after the last dose. trial
Cycles people discuss
- Stay on: Like minoxidil, hair use is treated as years, not a 12-week blast. forum
- Fin → dut switch: Common patterns: stop fin and start 0.5 mg daily the next day, or overlap a few weeks. Expect a shed either way in the lore. forum
- Daily → 2–3×/week: People dropping daily for sides use the long half-life as permission. 2025–26 posts argue whether that still beats daily fin. forum
- Time to wash out: Detectable for 4–6 months after the last capsule. Plan blood donation and pregnancy-household rules on that clock, not on “I skipped this week.” trial
Timing
- Why 2–3×/week exists: You do not need a daily peak the way you do with fin. Hair surgeons sometimes start twice weekly for that reason. forum
- Scalp lag: Forum PK talk says serum ≠ scalp calendar — 1–3 months of scalp presence is a 2024–26 talking point. forum
- Serum half-life: About 5 weeks (some write-ups 4–5 or 5–6). Finasteride is ~6–8 hours. This is the whole “weekend miss does not equal washout” point. trial
- Still in blood: Concentrations can stay measurable 4–6 months after stopping. trial
- Steady DHT crush: BPH data: ~95% median serum DHT drop at 4 years on 0.5 mg; testosterone median +22% still inside the normal band. trial
- Blood donation: At least 6 months after the last dose (label / ISHRS). trial
More on what it is
- Why people talk about it: r/tressless 2024–26 is full of “dut is just better than fin” albums and “dut wrecked my libido” logs. Tatem-style hair/TRT rooms name 0.5 mg next to minoxidil as the serious DHT move. forum
- What it is: Avodart — a dual blocker of 5-AR type 1 and type 2. Finasteride is mostly type 2. Same family, harder DHT cut, much longer half-life. Not a peptide, not minoxidil. trial
- How it works (plain): Less 5-AR → less testosterone converted to DHT. Follicles that shrink under DHT get a quieter androgen signal. Testosterone itself often ticks up a bit and stays in range. trial
- Numbers people quote: ~90–95%+ serum DHT cut on 0.5 mg vs ~70% on finasteride 1 mg. Olsen-style dose work: more scalp hairs as you go 0.1 → 0.5 → 2.5 mg. trial
- Label vs hair: FDA job in the US is BPH at 0.5 mg daily. Hair is off-label here; approved for AGA in Korea / Japan / Taiwan at that same 0.5 mg. trial
- The long tail: Half-life ~5 weeks. Miss a few days and people still panic-shed in threads, but the drug is not gone. Blood donation wait is 6 months after the last dose so a pregnant recipient cannot get it. trial
Stacks
- + oral or topical minoxidil: The 2020s hair power couple on r/tressless. forum
- Big 3 with dut instead of fin: Dut + minox + ketoconazole. forum
- After fin: Replace, do not run both long-term — dual 5-AR stacking is usually called redundant and side-heavier. forum
- + tadalafil: Sexual-side insurance in TRT/hair crossover logs. Separate mechanism. forum
- Microneedling / keto shampoo: Same adjuncts as the fin stack. forum
- Oral minox + oral dut + meso dut (2025 clinic combo): Real-practice write-ups claimed the triple looked strongest at 12 months; hypertrichosis was the common AE, ED still showed up in the oral-dut arms. Attribution is messy. trial
Access talk
- India / generic 0.5 mg is the cheap hair-telehealth shelf people actually name. Soft capsules, not a peptide vial. forum
- Compounded topical dut (0.05–0.1% class) and telehealth sprays are 503A patient-specific — not an FDA hair topical. forum
- Not a July 2026 peptide PCAC story. Access is Rx generic vs compounding vs meso clinic. forum
- Labeled oral is the pharmacy path: Avodart 0.5 mg for BPH. Hair at that same 0.5 mg is off-label in the US, labeled AGA in Korea/Japan/Taiwan. trial
- Mesotherapy / scalp injection is clinic-adjacent (0.005–0.05% session talk). 2026 write-ups still measure serum DHT drops, so “local-only” is the marketing line, not the lab. trial
Labs people mention
- No PFS lab. Sexual/mood complaints on-drug or after stop do not have a named blood marker in those threads. forum
- DHT / T: 0.5 mg daily is the ~90–95% serum DHT cut in the usual Avodart story; T may tick up inside range. trial
- PSA: 5-AR drugs lower PSA — labs need the context or the number lies. Meso still moved free PSA ~18% in a 2026 comparison. trial
Storage notes
- Finished capsules: Swallow whole; the liquid inside is not a DIY topical unless a pharmacy made that product on purpose. forum
- Storage: Ordinary room-temp pharmacy label. forum
Watch for
- Sexual sides: Lower libido, weaker erections, watery semen, less semen volume. Some r/tressless logs are mild; others are “almost complete loss of libido and impotence” after starting dut. Same class as fin, louder in fear threads because DHT is crushed harder. forum
- Mood / flat / brain-fog: A minority report. Hard to separate from nocebo and from the internet PFS narrative. forum
- PFS-shaped fear: Because the half-life is weeks, people who get sides cannot “just wait two days.” That lingering is the main reason some stay on fin. forum
- Gynecomastia / tender nips: Less testosterone→DHT can mean more aromatization to estradiol in the usual forum cartoon. Not everyone; still watched. forum
- Switch shed: Looks like the drug is failing for 1–3 months. forum
- Topical is not automatically side-free: Meso/topical dut still generates “I got sides anyway” posts. forum
- Neurosteroid / allopregnanolone 2026 X talk: Dual 5-AR blockade is now argued as more than DHT — sleep/mood/GABA-metabolite stories. Loud on X; not a new labeled AE table. forum
- Stay-on drug. Like minoxidil, hair use is years. The 5-week half-life means “I skipped this week” is not a washout. forum
- Teratogenic / women / pregnancy: Do not handle leaking capsules if you can be pregnant. Do not donate blood for 6 months after stopping. trial
- PSA masking: 5-AR inhibitors lower measured PSA — tell the clinician so they do not misread a prostate screen. trial
- BPH vs hair identity: 0.5 mg is the same capsule. Hair use is still off-label in the US. trial
- Meso is not side-free. Serum DHT/PSA still move, and a 2025 paradoxical-alopecia series exists. trial
