Hydrafinil, also called 9-fluorenol, is a non-peptide research chemical people discuss for staying awake and feeling less sluggish. Some report a brief, useful lift; others find it weak or uncomfortable. Headaches, sleep disruption and occasional more troubling reports sit alongside the positive accounts. It is a different molecule from modafinil, despite the similar name.
What it is and why people compare it
- Hydrafinil means 9-fluorenol here. The chemical names fluoren-9-ol and 9-hydroxyfluorene refer to this same identity. The “finil” ending does not make it modafinil or establish matching effects, risks or doses. Official context Official context
- The appeal is shorter-feeling alertness. People compare it with modafinil because both appear in wakefulness discussions. One LongeCity user found Hydrafinil subtler and less stimulating; that personal comparison does not establish which compound is stronger. LongeCity
Benefits people report
- Less grogginess and easier work. A 50 mg oral report described strong alertness, but coffee accompanied it. Another contributor reported energy bordering on euphoria when their stimulant tolerance was low. These accounts do not measure learning, judgment or work quality. Reddit Reddit
- A lift is not guaranteed. A LongeCity account found the effect extremely subtle and underwhelming. “Clean wakefulness” describes an impression, not a dependable result. LongeCity
Doses people discuss
- 50 mg orally; a separate log started with 53 mg. The first account included coffee. The powder log’s heading says 53 mg twice, but its narrative specifies a 52 mg redose, so no exact total is assigned here. That log also reports caffeine and nicotine co-use. Reddit Personal report
- 50–150 mg per administration in a five-day capsule account. That writer reported a maximum of 600 mg in a day and headaches above 75 mg. The daily maximum is an outlying personal total, not a typical amount or safe ceiling. LongeCity
- More did not reliably help. One reply reports little benefit at 120 mg without a clear route; another describes agitation after ingesting 220 mg. These milligram amounts do not establish an escalation ladder. Reddit
Half-life
- 6–8 hours is unverified forum lore. A StackAdvice author who had not tried Hydrafinil listed this estimate without a supporting measurement. No dependable human elimination half-life was established by the inspected sources. Half-life means a measured amount falling by half; it is not the point when someone stops feeling alert. Reddit
Onset: when people notice it
- About 30 minutes in one oral powder log. Fuller effects came near one hour. This is felt onset, not a blood peak; the log also mentions caffeine and nicotine, without clearly timing caffeine relative to that onset. Personal report
Duration: how long people feel it
- Roughly four hours in separate logs. The early oral log recorded 4.2 hours; the coffee-paired account reported four. A brief 2026 recollection agreed but expressed uncertainty. Personal report Reddit Personal report
- Sleep interference can outlast the useful lift. A different commenter said Hydrafinil lasted long enough to disrupt sleep. That disagreement means a short alertness report cannot serve as a bedtime cutoff or a clearance estimate. Reddit
Repeated use and breaks
- Short trials and occasional use both appear. One writer described five consecutive days. Another reported use from September 9–14, 2014 and feeling drained before redosing. A 2022 contributor later preferred occasional use; these are personal histories, not an agreed cycle. LongeCity Reddit
- Longer use does not reveal a tested break schedule. One commenter estimated 7 g used over six months without a clear calendar. That is a cumulative amount, not a daily dose or proof of continuous use. No supported on/off schedule or tolerance-reset interval emerges from these accounts. Personal report
What can go wrong
- Headache, itching and agitation appear. The recent reply recalled headaches; an early commenter stopped after two days with weak effects and itching. Another reported agitation. Frequency and causation remain unknown. Personal report Reddit
- Paranoia is also reported. One commenter seeking wakefulness for self-reported narcolepsy described becoming paranoid and irrational. The amount, route and other exposures were not supplied, so the report cannot establish a diagnosis or prove causation. Reddit
- A serious cardiac story remains unresolved. One author reported chest symptoms, hospital observation and elevated troponin after Hydrafinil alongside caffeine, several supplements, alcohol and weightlifting. Medical records were not verified, and commenters disputed the account’s authenticity. It should neither establish Hydrafinil-caused heart damage nor be dismissed as proof of safety. Personal report
- Tested sport: prohibited in competition under WADA S6.A. The 2026 list explicitly names Hydrafinil (fluorenol) as a non-Specified Stimulant. A reported four-hour effect does not tell an athlete when a test would be negative. Official context
What the community accounts add
- Lost sleep changed one person’s response. Introspecta found it more noticeable when already feeling well and underwhelming when sleep deprived. Feeling stimulated did not consistently remove fatigue. LongeCity
- One mixed-compound account stopped over body odor. The writer linked strong odor to Hydrafinil or fladrafinil and later reiterated the problem. It is the same person’s follow-up, and the report cannot identify which compound was responsible. Reddit
- An unusual powder is not an identity test. The 2026 reply describes a very fluffy powder but gives little use history. Appearance cannot establish identity or purity; the inspected accounts offer no independent product confirmation. Personal report
What the human research actually shows
- A small metabolism study is not an effectiveness trial. Knoop and colleagues studied urinary metabolites after a single oral administration in three healthy men. The inspected abstract supports identity and metabolism context, but supplies neither a plasma half-life nor evidence of cognitive benefit or long-term safety. Its urine-collection period is not a felt-duration or drug-test clearance window. Official context
