Indolepropionamide, often called IPAM, draws biohacker interest for energy, endurance and possible longevity effects. Small firsthand reports include noticeable energy, no cognitive change and no noticeable effect at all. The longevity interest rests on animal research, not demonstrated life extension in people.

What it is and why people discuss it

  • A small indole compound. IPAM is indole-3-propionamide, the amide relative of indole-3-propionic acid (IPA). It is a non-peptide compound; Ipamorelin is a different identity despite the similar abbreviation. Animal context
  • Energy is the practical question. People want to know whether mitochondrial research translates into easier exercise or a noticeable lift. The October timing thread pairs that interest with a more modest experience: slightly better morning cardio resilience that the commenter thought might be placebo. Reddit
  • IPA and melatonin are comparisons, not substitutes. The original study compared related indoles. Changing the molecule matters: IPA findings and melatonin sleep effects cannot simply be assigned to IPAM. Animal context

Benefits people report

  • Energy and endurance. A 2023 commenter described both during a course lasting more than a month. This was a personal impression, without a controlled comparison or recorded exercise test. Personal report
  • No noticeable benefit also appears. One liquid user reported no noticeable effect during three days in June 2025. Personal report
  • Focus and speech in an uncertain-dose report. A capsule user described better focus and easier speech, while emphasizing possible placebo. The same episode included insomnia and teeth grinding. Personal report

Doses people report

These are reported exposures, not instructions or a low/common/high dose ladder. Routes and formulations are too incomplete to combine them.

  • 2 mg per use; about 5 mg/day sublingually. One Reddit user usually took 2 mg, route unstated; another reported roughly 5 mg under the tongue daily with no subjective effect. These are separate accounts, not a standard range. Reddit
  • 6 mg/day before exercise. The timing-thread commenter reported use about one hour before the gym; route was not given. Reddit
  • About 15 mg/day in a longer account. The month-plus report did not identify route or formulation. Its higher amount is not evidence that increasing the amount improves results. Personal report
  • 2 mg/day of a liquid in one short trial. The stated 0.33 mL of 6 mg/mL equals 1.98 mg, rounded to 2 mg; volume is not compound amount. Personal report
  • An uncertain 2–5 mg capsule amount. The author could not measure the intended 2 mg accurately. This estimate cannot establish a dose-response relationship. Personal report

Half-life

  • No usable community half-life estimate. The inspected experience threads do not establish how quickly IPAM leaves the human body. Daytime energy or a daily habit cannot supply that number. Reddit Reddit

Onset

  • About five hours to a stronger feeling in one report. The 2 mg user described energy becoming almost euphoric then. That is not necessarily when the effect first began. Reddit
  • Gym timing is not onset. Taking it one hour before a workout does not show that it starts working after one hour. No repeatable onset window emerged from these reports. Reddit

Duration

  • Through the day, in one account. The 2 mg user described energy lasting through the day, without an exact endpoint. That is felt duration, not elimination half-life. Reddit
  • Into the next day in the capsule report. Speech felt easier after the day of use, but sleep loss made the author question their perception. Personal report

Cycles and breaks

  • More than one month in one daily-use account. The 15 mg/day commenter described that observation period, not a planned cycling schedule. No break or follow-up after stopping was given. Personal report
  • A skipped day after symptoms. The liquid user paused after three days because of bowel upset, not as a planned cycle. Personal report

What to watch for

  • Insomnia and teeth grinding. The capsule user reported only 3–4 hours of sleep and skipped the next day after a 9 a.m. exposure. Morning use did not prevent sleep disruption in that account. Personal report
  • Feeling odd at higher amounts. The 2 mg user said larger amounts felt weird. Another person disliked the aftertaste and stopped short of long-term use. Reddit
  • Bowel upset with competing explanations. That liquid account involved heavy probiotic use and uncertain solvent-related bitterness, preventing confident attribution to IPAM. Personal report
  • Unknown longer-term risks. Forum participants themselves question delayed harms and product quality. A commenter reporting no side effects for a month does not establish long-term safety or safe combinations. Rapamycin News Personal report

Community experiences and disagreements

  • Energy does not equal sharper thinking. Legitimate_Banana512 reported no significant short-term cognitive effect. The same thread contains secondhand sleep-aid and lethargy claims; it does not establish how often those occur. Reddit
  • Sleep stayed unchanged in the exercise account. The commenter described poor sleep both before and during use. They repeated that the small exercise difference might be placebo; the follow-up is part of the same report, not a second success. Reddit
  • Combination suggestions are not combination results. The timing-thread author proposed tryptophan or 5-HTP, but supplied no demonstrated IPAM-stack outcome. Chemical resemblance and confident forum explanations cannot establish an interaction or a useful regimen. Reddit
  • Some experiences remain too vague to interpret. A Rapamycin News participant described contradictory effects but did not state what changed. Others asked whether the scientific case largely repeats one paper and discussed funding more research; that is interest and uncertainty, not a completed human trial. Rapamycin News
  • A disputed negative animal citation. Participants challenged whether a cited negative longevity experiment tested IPA rather than IPAM. The accessible primary abstract does not resolve the identity, so neither successful replication nor a confirmed IPAM failure follows from that exchange. Rapamycin News Animal context

What the research can tell us

  • The longevity result was in rotifers. In the 2010 study, mean lifespan rose from 24.6 to 90.5 days at the highest tested concentration—about a 268% increase by calculation. These microscopic animals were rotifers, not humans; this does not predict a human benefit. Animal context
  • Rat brain persistence is not human half-life. The paper followed brain concentrations for up to eight hours after injected IPAM in rats and called its half-life long. It did not establish an oral or sublingual human elimination half-life. Animal context
