L-tetrahydropalmatine, usually shortened to L-THP, is a plant-derived alkaloid discussed for getting to sleep. Some users describe marked sedation or easier sleep; others notice little benefit, next-morning heaviness or an unpleasant reaction. The isolated compound, Corydalis extracts and sleep blends are not interchangeable.
What L-THP is
- The L matters. L-THP means levo-tetrahydropalmatine, one molecular form of tetrahydropalmatine. It is a non-peptide alkaloid found in Corydalis; a product labeled only THP or Corydalis does not establish that same isolated compound. Official context Bluelight
- Rotunda is a product name in these reports. The Vietnam traveler used a tablet sold as Rotunda and only tentatively identified its ingredient. That experience belongs here with the uncertainty intact; it does not authenticate every product using that name. Personal report
- Sedation is the appeal, but the mechanism is not a promise. Research describes dopamine-receptor blockade. That helps explain why discussions compare L-THP with sedating psychiatric medicines, but does not establish equivalent effects, interchangeable doses or a treatment role. Official context Reddit
What people hope to get
- Easier sleep, rather than a broad recovery effect. FrigoCoder describes improved sleep despite chronic fatigue syndrome, but no improvement in brain fog or endurance. This is a narrower claim than restoring daytime energy or treating the underlying illness. Reddit
- Comparisons are personal. One poster likens the feeling to Seroquel; another prefers an L-THP/melatonin combination to past benzodiazepines and zopiclone. Neither is a controlled comparison or a reason to replace a medicine. Reddit Personal report
Doses people report
These are attributed experiences, not a dose range or regimen. Milligrams of an extract, blend or tablet are not automatically milligrams of L-THP.
- 30 mg, then a separate 30 mg after waking. FrigoCoder reports the first amount before sleep and the second with magnesium after premature waking: 60 mg across those two administrations, not 60 mg at once. The account does not explicitly describe the route or verify the formulation. Reddit
- Around 50 mg in another sleep report. Own_Adhesiveness7042 names this amount for sedation. Product identity and route are not independently verified, and the surrounding replies include nonresponse and an adverse high-amount experience. Reddit
- A 150 mg oral account is a different, confounded story. TryingToGetSober later describes oral powder at that amount, alongside 0.5 mg melatonin and a history of benzodiazepine co-use. It is not evidence for a usual dose, a bodyweight rule or an escalation target. Reddit
Half-life: what people repeat
- About 10 hours is a circulated claim. In the MAOI discussion, neverstopnodding repeats a ten-hour half-life and wonders about metabolites. This is borrowed pharmacology, not their own measurement; sleeping through a night cannot verify it. Reddit
When people notice it
- About an hour to tiredness in one unsuccessful night. TryingToGetSober reports 120 mg after waking, then another 30 mg half an hour later. Tiredness began roughly an hour after the first amount, but sleep came only later; benzodiazepines and a daytime nap complicate that timeline. Personal report
- A pre-bed habit is not a guaranteed onset. The same author later describes taking oral L-THP about an hour before bed, with melatonin, and says late food delayed the effect. This is a changed experience from the same person, not independent confirmation. Reddit
How long the experience lasts
- Five hours of sleep is one night’s outcome. The Rotunda traveler reports about five restful hours. That is sleep duration after an unverified tablet, not a five-hour drug effect or a measured half-life. Personal report
- Morning sedation also appears. After roughly a week of 50 mg nightly, neverstopnodding reports morning sedation while also taking Nardil, Abilify, Ambien and Focalin. The report cannot isolate L-THP or establish a predictable time when impairment ends. Reddit
Repeated use and breaks
- Benefit can fade after a few weeks. TryingToGetSober reports loss of effect, an unspecified pause and no withdrawal they could discern, with benzodiazepine co-use. That does not prove absence of dependence or define a safe break length. Reddit
- Tolerance is reported with a sleep stack too. Fergoose89 describes tolerance while using L-THP with melatonin. Their proposed alternating supplements were a plan, not a successful tested cycle; these accounts establish no standard on/off schedule. Personal report
What deserves caution
- A severe adverse account involved other medicines. bad_ukulele_player reports being difficult to awaken and prolonged vomiting while also taking an SSRI and trazodone. The amount and diagnosis are unverified; neither the report nor reassuring replies establish which drug caused it or which combinations are safe. Reddit
- Higher amounts can feel worse, not just sleepier. DantesLadder describes panic-like symptoms after an unspecified excessive amount. A separate withdrawal-thread commenter suspects emotional flatness but acknowledges withdrawal itself as another explanation. Reddit Reddit
- Liver concerns cannot be dismissed as “just an herb.” CDC investigated hepatitis after Jin Bu Huan use and found L-THP in tested tablets despite incorrect plant labeling. Those historical product cases do not quantify risk from today’s isolated compound, but they matter when interpreting safety claims. Official context
What the mixed experiences show
- The blend can work when the isolated product does little. Ok-Rule-2943 reports little benefit alone but sleep after another supplement containing it; Foxxie also reports little effect. A blend’s result cannot establish which ingredient helped. Reddit
- Extract stories do not settle the isolated-compound question. On Bluelight, one person reports little effect from a Corydalis extract; another describes sedation and pain relief from THP while explicitly not knowing its molecular form. Both are relevant comparisons, but neither authenticates an L-THP-only result. Bluelight
- Tongue injury preceded later positive updates. TryingToGetSober initially reports a tongue injury after sleeping and wonders about a seizure; no seizure is confirmed. Later positive updates and eventual fading benefit belong to that same history, not a clean story of uninterrupted success. Reddit Personal report
Human measurements and their limits
- 11.42 ± 2.43 hours: one measured terminal half-life. A 2011 study abstract describes 12 healthy men given a single 60 mg oral disintegrating tablet. This is blood elimination in that formulation and population, not a community sleep dose or felt duration. Official context
- 13.3 hours: a separate study’s geometric mean. The small cocaine-user study used 30 mg orally every 12 hours and reported a median blood peak at 1.5 hours. Its 3.5-day exposure showed no significant group difference in sleepiness scores and could not exclude longer-term liver harm; it does not establish insomnia efficacy. Official context
