Lysine is an essential amino acid usually discussed as an oral supplement for recurring cold sores. People describe fewer outbreaks, smaller sores or quicker recovery; others report no benefit or stomach trouble. Genital-herpes accounts also appear, often with other supplements or antiviral medication.
What lysine is
- L-lysine is a single amino acid. The body needs lysine from food to make proteins. L-lysine is the form named on supplements; lysine hydrochloride, also called monohydrochloride or HCl, is a salt form. A label’s stated lysine amount and the weight of its salt are not automatically the same number. Official context Official context Official context Official context
- A peptide containing lysine is a different substance. Lysine joined to other amino acids in a peptide sequence does not carry the same evidence as a standalone supplement. Likewise, an oral capsule, a lip balm and a multi-ingredient injectable blend are separate products; their amounts and effects cannot be exchanged. Official context Reddit Community guide
What people hope to notice
- Fewer outbreaks or less disruption when one arrives. Cold-sore posters describe catching the first tingle, smaller lesions and fewer recurrences. The December discussion also includes symptoms returning when an author lowered the daily amount and a different person seeing no cold-sore benefit at all. These accounts do not establish a reliable dose-response relationship. Reddit Reddit
- Nerve discomfort and general energy are less consistent claims. A herpes-thread reply reported no nerve-pain relief. In the MTHFR thread, a long-term user credited lysine with better energy, while another found no benefit after a year. Those reports do not establish treatment of chronic fatigue, endometriosis or a genetic variant. Reddit Reddit
The comparisons that matter
- Oral lysine versus a lysine balm. One commenter found oral supplementation did not shorten an established outbreak and preferred a balm. Another combined a daily oral supplement with a lip product. The formulations were not verified, so these are product experiences rather than a controlled comparison of routes. Reddit Reddit
- Lysine versus prescription antivirals. People compare it with valacyclovir, acyclovir and famciclovir, or take both. The two-day improvement in the herpes seed post followed lysine plus valacyclovir; it cannot show what lysine added. CDC identifies clinical evidence for antiviral medicines in genital herpes, a different evidence position from supplement testimonials. Reddit Reddit Official context
Doses people discuss
Reported oral supplement amounts only, not a regimen. Topical strengths and injectable blend concentrations are not folded into these figures.
- Oral daily examples: 500 mg, 850 mg or 1,000 mg. The herpes post names 500 mg daily outside outbreaks; another reply uses 1,000 mg daily with a balm. A separate cold-sore commenter describes one 425 mg capsule morning and evening, totaling 850 mg/day. These are individual reported habits, not an established best amount. Reddit Reddit
- During symptoms: 1,000 mg/day or up to 3,000 mg/day in different accounts. The herpes author reports 1,000 mg/day during outbreaks alongside an antiviral. The cold-sore author uses up to three 1,000 mg tablets daily alongside acyclovir cream. Those totals describe different people and combinations; 1,000 mg equals 1 g. Reddit Reddit
- Higher reports bring tolerability concerns. One commenter describes 4,000–7,000 mg/day and stomach pain without food. A different person reports becoming very sick after about 7,000 mg in one day. These amounts are not a safe ceiling or evidence that more works better; ambiguous pill counts and inconsistent totals are excluded. Reddit Reddit
Half-life
- No dependable community half-life was established. The inspected oral-use discussions do not give a traceable human clearance estimate. Half-life is the time for a measured amount to fall by half; taking a supplement once or twice a day does not measure it. Reddit Reddit
Onset: when people notice a change
- Improvement within about two days appears in combined-use reports. A cold-sore author described reaching the healing stage from Tuesday to Thursday while also using acyclovir cream, ice and vinegar. The genital-herpes author reported an outbreak gone in two days with valacyclovir. Neither provides a lysine-only onset clock. Reddit Reddit
- Starting at the tingle is a reported habit, not a guaranteed result. Some replies say a blister never develops when they act early. Other people continue having symptoms despite repeated use. A prevention story cannot tell a reader how many minutes after swallowing lysine an effect begins. Reddit Reddit
Duration: how long a change lasts
- No reliable hours-per-dose benefit window. Accounts describe healing over days or outbreak-free periods during repeated use. Neither tells us how long one oral dose acts, and continued nerve pain or recurrent sores remain part of the record. Reddit Reddit
- Three quiet months did not establish lasting protection. The herpes author reported three outbreak-free months while consistently taking a supplement bundle, followed by renewed monthly outbreaks after stopping it. All those supplements changed together, and stress also featured in the account. Reddit
Cycles and time off
- Daily habits and outbreak-only use both appear. Some people use lysine continuously; others describe taking it around early symptoms. A MTHFR commenter reports daily use since 2002, whereas another tried it for a year without benefit. Long use by one person does not establish long-term safety. Reddit Reddit
- No agreed on/off calendar emerges. The cold-sore thread includes alternating 1,000 and 2,000 mg on different days, which is a changing daily amount rather than a break. Pauses, occasional use and stopping a supplement bundle are different patterns; none establishes a necessary cycling or washout period. Reddit Reddit
Good to know
- Stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea can change the experience. Reports include nausea with higher amounts and repeated stomach pain and diarrhea after empty-stomach use. The latter author also had unresolved questions about whether their facial lesions were cold sores. The post’s morning/night wording leaves its daily total unclear. Reddit Personal report
- Fewer visible sores does not prove no transmission. These supplement reports do not measure viral shedding or transmission. CDC notes that genital HSV can be shed without visible symptoms; feeling better cannot establish that an infection has cleared or that a partner faces no risk. Official context
- A nutrient label does not establish every use as safe. The thread’s claims about very high doses being proven safe, or about lysine treating COVID or endometriosis, were not substantiated. Familiarity with oral lysine also cannot establish the identity, sterility or safety of an injectable blend. Reddit Community guide
From community discussion
- An empty stomach is a point of friction. One person followed the bottle’s fasting directions and developed GI symptoms; replies advised food. Other users also associate eating with better tolerance. These experiences do not establish a universal fasting rule or prove that food prevents adverse effects. Personal report Reddit
- The lysine–arginine diet story remains a theory in these discussions. People change foods while taking lysine, hoping that extra lysine limits arginine available to the virus. The cell-culture rationale does not prove that a person’s diet prevents outbreaks. Genotype-based advice in the MTHFR thread also came from a commenter promoting a service; those claims did not establish an individual response. Reddit Official context
- Supplements and topical products often share the credit. Zinc, vitamins C and D, omega-3s, monolaurin, lip balms and antiviral products appear beside lysine. Oral and genital symptoms differ, and one GI-symptom poster was unsure whether their facial lesions were HSV. Those experiences cannot establish the same outcome. Reddit Personal report
- A later product switch is still the same person’s story. In the healing thread, an enthusiastic commenter also described stomach trouble at higher intake and later blamed fillers after changing products. This is a follow-up to the earlier account, not independent confirmation, and it does not prove that an excipient caused the symptoms. Reddit
- Kimera blend references do not isolate lysine. A promotional handbook lists lysine within Kimera Chems’ Centaur recovery blend alongside other amino acids. Its performance and recovery claims concern the combination and come with commercial promotion. They do not establish a standalone injected-lysine benefit or transfer the oral cold-sore reports to that blend. Community guide
What the human research adds
- Older controlled studies point in different directions. The 1980 Milman study found no significant overall recurrence or healing benefit, although a recurrence-free subset signal was borderline. Its 65 completers crossed between two 12-week periods without a washout. The 1987 Griffith abstract reports fewer recurrences and faster healing in a different six-month trial; three authors had supplement-company affiliations. Official context Official context
- A positive trial is not a settled prevention claim. Cochrane’s 2015 review did not establish that lysine prevents cold sores. Its evidence search ended in May 2015. That conclusion and the mixed user reports leave room for uncertainty, rather than proving everyone benefits or that every positive experience is mistaken. Official context
