N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (NALT)
Also known as
NALT · N acetyl L tyrosine · N-acetyltyrosine · acetyl L-tyrosine
Community talk. May contain inaccuracies. Not medical advice. Not a protocol. Not for human or animal use.
People discuss N-acetyl-L-tyrosine, or NALT, for focus, motivation and feeling more able to handle demanding days. Some prefer it to plain L-tyrosine; others report no useful change, agitation or sleepiness. These are individual experiences, not established benefits.
What NALT is
- An acetylated form of L-tyrosine. NALT has an acetyl group attached to the amino acid L-tyrosine. N-acetyl-L-tyrosine and acetyl L-tyrosine are names used for it; NAT also appears in nutrition papers. Plain L-tyrosine is the nearest comparison, but it is a different molecule. NALT is not N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and the two abbreviations should not be swapped. Official context Official context Personal report
- The appeal is more mental drive. Posters describe easier task engagement, a smoother lift or a different feel from plain tyrosine. Feeling stimulated does not measure dopamine levels or diagnose a deficiency. The disagreement about how the two forms feel is part of the subject, rather than evidence that one form is universally superior. Personal report Reddit
Benefits people report
- More focus or motivation for some. In a direct comparison thread, one person called NALT more potent but described similar focus, while another found plain tyrosine more stressful. Those preferences differ from the original poster, who felt worse on NALT. Amounts were not supplied, so the thread cannot establish a potency ratio. Reddit
- No noticeable cognitive improvement also occurs. A person who had experimented with several nootropics reported little or no useful change with NALT among them. Their follow-up specified a 350-mg capsule once daily. Noopept and choline products were also in the broader experiment, limiting any single-compound conclusion. Personal report
NALT versus L-tyrosine
- Feeling different does not establish better absorption. The comparison accounts disagree in both directions. A later poster described sleepiness on NALT that they did not notice with plain tyrosine, while also discussing Adderall use. Claims about greater absorption, brain entry or a personal need for one form need more than a subjective response. Reddit Personal report
- Tyrosine research is useful context, with a boundary. L-tyrosine is a building material for catecholamines such as dopamine and norepinephrine. In a small double-blind crossover study of 20 adults, it improved selected working-memory measures during multitasking, but not performance broadly or on the simpler task battery. That finding concerns L-tyrosine; it does not establish the same effects for oral NALT. Official context
Doses people discuss
These are descriptions of reported NALT use, not recommendations or safe limits. Milligrams refer to NALT itself, not an equivalent amount of L-tyrosine or the total weight of a blend.
- 350 mg by mouth once daily. This was the capsule amount in the no-improvement account. It is an individual reported use, not a starting dose or evidence of a minimum effective amount. Personal report
- 700–1,050 mg by mouth per use. The long-term positive poster described two or three 350-mg capsules, typically repeating roughly every 3–6 hours while awake. Their total daily amount was not specified. This is one person’s pattern, not a community dose range. Personal report
- 2,800 mg/day was a reported suggestion, not a verified completed course. A different poster described four 350-mg pills twice daily, then clarified that a doctor had recommended rather than prescribed it. The actual initial use they reported was three pills, or 1,050 mg, with mixed calm and anxious feelings. Personal report
Half-life
- About two hours appears as unsupported forum shorthand. One commenter grouped NALT, L-tyrosine, mucuna and L-dopa under this estimate without a study or route. That does not establish a human oral NALT half-life. Half-life measures decline in a specified substance; it is different from how long motivation or anxiety lasts. Reddit
Onset: when people notice something
- About 20 minutes in one short log. A five-day NALT log described a mood lift after its first 500-mg amount. The numbered log did not explicitly identify the route and later mentioned Noopept co-use. This isolated report cannot establish a usual oral onset. Personal report
- An immediate boost was claimed for sublingual powder. The long-term poster also described putting an unmeasured amount under the tongue. There was no timed comparison with capsules; that account supplies neither a reliable onset in minutes nor a transferable dose. Personal report
Duration: how long the feeling lasts
- Around an hour for one mixed response. The poster who initially took 1,050 mg described the feeling wearing off after roughly an hour, followed by high anxiety. This was a mixed subjective episode, not an established hour of benefit. Personal report
- Next-day effects were claimed in a different log. The five-day log described benefit continuing to the following day and wearing off during a no-dose day. Repeated use, uncertain route and Noopept make a single-dose duration impossible to isolate. Neither account measures elimination from blood. Personal report
Cycles and time off
- Frequent use and occasional use both appear. The positive poster described about four years of repeated L-tyrosine/NALT use collectively. A different commenter limited NALT to a couple of times weekly because greater frequency brought headache, irritability or anxiety. Neither pattern establishes long-term safety or an ideal schedule. Personal report Personal report
- A short log is not a cycling rule. The five-day account included a no-dose third day and difficulty falling asleep that night. It does not establish withdrawal, a required break or a reliable reset period. No tested on/off calendar emerged from the inspected reports. Personal report
Good to know
- Agitation can outweigh the hoped-for focus. Reports include irritability, anxiety and headache. These complaints should stay beside the positive accounts; calling NALT an amino-acid derivative does not make those experiences irrelevant or establish that larger amounts are safe. Personal report Reddit
- Sleepiness and stomach symptoms are also reported. One NALT-versus-tyrosine account describes reduced energy and sleepiness. The short five-day log includes diarrhea on its first two days. These selected reports cannot tell us how often adverse effects occur or prove their cause. Personal report Personal report
- Co-use is not compatibility evidence. Caffeine, amphetamine and bupropion appear in the enthusiastic account; Noopept and choline appear elsewhere. Such combinations complicate attribution. They do not establish a safe combination or justify replacing prescribed mental-health treatment. Personal report Personal report
- Ingredient reports do not establish injectable-blend effects. An oral capsule account, an unmeasured sublingual report and supervised intravenous nutrition are different exposures. None verifies the ingredients, amount, sterility or cognitive effects of a supplier’s injectable blend. There is no justified oral-to-injection conversion here. Personal report Official context
From community discussion
- The same person can like it and still limit it. The commenter who described stronger NALT effects and similar focus in the comparison thread also described headaches, irritability and anxiety with more frequent use. Those posts belong to one person’s experience; counting them as independent endorsements would hide the tradeoff. Reddit Personal report
- A null result does not prove the amount was wrong. Replies to the no-improvement account suggested switching forms or increasing tyrosine substantially. Those were suggestions, not tested explanations for the result. Differences in expectations, baseline state, other products and the compounds themselves remain unresolved. Personal report
- The formulation argument is still open. The sleepy poster described 400 mg of NALT and contrasted it with their 500-mg morning L-tyrosine use. Their medication context and unequal amounts prevent a controlled comparison. Their further explanations involving smell, tyramine and gut bacteria remained speculation, not established NALT benefits. Personal report
What the human research does and does not show
- Intravenous nutrition is a different question from focus. A 2003 study abstract describes 13 adults receiving continuous parenteral nutrition: about 35% of administered N-acetyl-L-tyrosine was excreted unchanged in urine. The authors judged the mixture’s aromatic-amino-acid provision sufficient for the specified patients. This neither proves that oral NALT is useless nor supports claims of superior brain delivery. The percentage is not an oral absorption estimate or a half-life. Official context
- The evidence leaves important questions unanswered. The inspected cognitive trial used plain L-tyrosine, while the NALT human study addressed intravenous nutrition. Neither determines a cognitive dose, oral onset, duration, long-term safety or drug-interaction profile for NALT supplements. Community anecdotes provide experiences to compare, not proof of efficacy or safety. Official context Official context
