Carnivore and animal-based are meat-centered diets people use for a simpler food list or an elimination experiment. Carnivore usually removes plants; animal-based versions can add fruit, honey and dairy. Those additions change the diet substantially, so animal-based does not necessarily mean low-carbohydrate.
Paul Saladino guide · undated01
What the different food lists involve
Carnivore meals revolve around animal foods. Typical versions include meat, fish, eggs and some dairy, while leaving out vegetables, fruit, grains, beans and nuts. This removes whole food groups, not just sweets or highly processed snacks.
Cleveland Clinic · 2025Animal-based can bring carbohydrates back. Paul Saladino promotes a version with fruit, honey and raw dairy alongside meat, while excluding grains, beans, nuts and leafy greens. His guide also links to supplement shops.
Paul Saladino guide · undatedAn elimination diet includes checking foods on the way back in. A clinician-guided elimination diet removes suspected triggers, records food and symptoms, then reintroduces foods individually. The reintroduction step helps identify which food actually matters; simply staying on a very short list leaves that question unanswered.
Cleveland Clinic · 202202
Potential benefits
Some followers report weight loss. A survey of 2,029 carnivore eaters recorded lower self-reported body weight and high satisfaction. With no comparison group and likely missing people who quit, it does not establish that carnivore works better than a less restrictive diet.
Lennerz et al. · 2021Removing a particular trigger may ease symptoms. For someone with a food intolerance, identifying and removing the offending food can improve digestive comfort. That benefit concerns the particular trigger; it does not require assuming that all plant foods cause symptoms.
Cleveland Clinic · 202203
Good to know
A meat-only menu loses fiber and can leave nutrient gaps. Animal foods do not replace everything supplied by the excluded food groups. Constipation and nutritional shortfalls are concerns, and direct research on the diet remains limited; feeling well for a few weeks does not establish long-term safety.
Cleveland Clinic · 2025High LDL cholesterol can be silent. Saturated fat can raise blood cholesterol, and excess LDL contributes to plaque in arteries. Feeling energetic does not reveal cholesterol levels; a lipid blood test does.
American Heart Association · 2026Raw dairy adds an avoidable infection risk. Raw milk can carry harmful germs even from carefully managed farms. Pasteurization provides the nutritional benefits of milk with less infection risk; raw milk is especially hazardous during pregnancy or for people with weakened immunity.
CDC · 2025Food rules can become distressing. An ever-shrinking list of acceptable foods, difficulty eating enough or anxiety around shared meals deserves professional support. An eating-disorder history is a reason to involve an existing care team before adding restrictive rules.
NEDA · undatedSudden severe abdominal pain needs urgent assessment. Gallbladder problems can cause pain under the right ribs or in the upper abdomen, sometimes with nausea or vomiting.
NHS · 2025Fainting needs a medical check. Possible causes include inadequate food or fluids, overheating and heart problems. A clinician can assess the cause.

Trying stricter or more varied eating
Two weeks, four weeks and 30 days are trial formats people discuss. Accounts describe meat, salt and water, or a wider list with eggs and dairy, followed by continuing, adding foods back or stopping. They discuss changes in digestion, skin and appetite, and keeping notes on meals and training.
CommunityAdding fruit helped one member eat socially and settle diarrhea. An r/AnimalBased member described persistent diarrhea during 2½ years of carnivore, then improvement within a day or two of adding fruit. Their first addition was a restaurant fruit side; later they used berries and small bites of banana. They initially struggled with squash.
Community · Reddit/r/AnimalBasedAnother member preferred returning to stricter carnivore. In r/carnivorediet, one commenter reported that symptoms they associated with an autoimmune condition improved on a strict version and returned after resuming animal-based eating. They went back to carnivore.
Community · Reddit/r/carnivoredietAdding carbohydrates did not always mean sticking with fruit. One r/AnimalBased commenter reported better energy after leaving strict carnivore. They initially added melon, then used rice after describing fructose intolerance, moving beyond the group's usual food list.
Community · Reddit/r/AnimalBasedEarly symptoms and salt discussions
First-week headaches often become salt discussions. Accounts mention bathroom changes, salt cravings and falling energy; explanations include electrolytes, eating less and changing the food mix. Neither a headache nor a salt craving identifies a sodium shortage or the amount to use.
CommunityFood costs, repetition and eating with others
A smaller food list can become harder to eat and afford. After 27 days, a Carnivore Talk member described moving from eggs and ground beef to ribeye while struggling with digestion. Energy was better than before, but fatigue, low appetite and no clear mental-clarity benefit remained. They wanted to return to cheaper cuts.
Community · Carnivore TalkRepeating meals can simplify eating while making it more solitary. A member sharing a year of meat-and-fruit eating said they repeated similar meals and no longer routinely counted calories. They reported weight loss, but also described mostly eating alone and making exceptions for family and friends.

- what
- The moving part is the food list, not the nickname. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030, describe a pattern that includes protein from animal foods and from plant foods such as beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and soy. On a 2,000-calorie pattern the same edition lists about 3 vegetable servings, 2 fruit servings, 2 to 4 whole-grain servings, and 3 dairy servings, adjusted for the person. Meat, salt, and water drop the plant groups. A plate that adds fruit, honey, eggs, or dairy is a different menu under a similar name.
- The guidelines also say saturated fat should not exceed 10 percent of calories, and they point to vegetables, fruits, fermented foods, and high-fiber foods when they discuss a diverse gut microbiome. A meat-only stretch does not follow that pattern. It is not a medical prescription. The habit is a chosen menu for a set number of days, then a decision to continue, loosen, or stop.
- how
- Write the food list before breakfast on day one. Community notes use meat, salt, and water for a strict version, and eggs or dairy in others. Animal-based notes often add fruit or honey, and the boundary is disputed. If the list is not written down, the argument arrives at the table. Shop and cook only that list for the window you picked.
- Keep a protein figure in view from the same guidelines: 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, adjusted for the calories actually eaten. That is a planning range, not a promise about weight or muscle. Salt the food you eat. The guidelines say people 14 and older stay under 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day, and that highly active people may need more sodium to replace sweat. A headache in the first week does not, by itself, prove a sodium shortage.
- Use a time box. Community notes often name two or four weeks, or a thirty-day stretch, instead of a forever rule made on night three. Change as little else as you can. Write what was eaten, how training went, and what digestion did. At the end, keep the menu, add foods back one at a time, or stop. Adding a food back is part of reading the experiment. Community notes disagree about which version felt better. Those are personal histories, not a count of which menu is healthier.
- understand
- The federal pattern is built across food groups. Leaving plants out removes the foods that edition ties to fiber: whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and other high-fiber foods. A 2015 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position, in effect through 2018, defined fiber as material intrinsic and intact in plants and cited 14 grams per 1,000 calories. That older professional figure is not a line in the 2025–2030 text. A meat-only plate does not supply that plant fiber. Feeling different is a separate report from matching the pattern.
- Sodium is the other invented rule. The CDC Yellow Book, 2026 edition, says sweat contains sodium and may reach about 1 liter an hour, and that forcing water on someone who is not thirsty raises hyponatremia risk. During mild to moderate exertion, electrolyte drinks have no advantage over plain water on that page. Many hours in the heat are when it points to salty food. A headache does not, by itself, prove a salt deficit.
- Gallbladder pain, fainting, or a collapse of eating is where a clinician is the next step. So is an eating-disorder history if a very short food list starts to run the day. This page is not a treatment for those problems. Community notes describe bathroom changes, social friction, and people who felt better after adding foods back, alongside people who preferred the stricter list.
