A powered bed-cooling system adjusts the temperature where you sleep. Eight Sleep's Pod fits over an existing mattress and can cool or warm each side separately. The appeal is a more comfortable bed for hot sleepers and partners with different preferences, with hardware and subscription costs to consider.

How bed cooling works in practice
Water systems regulate the surface beneath you. The Pod has a cover containing small water channels, connected to a bedside hub. The hub controls the water temperature as it flows through the cover. The mattress underneath still supplies the support.
Moyen et al. · 2024Air systems cool in a different way. BedJet moves room air through the bedding to carry away body heat and moisture. It does not refrigerate that air, so selecting a cold number cannot make its output colder than the room. Its maker says cooling becomes less effective in very hot bedrooms.

A more comfortable night may feel more restful. In a 2025 randomized study of 34 healthy adults using Pod 3, participants reported better temperature comfort and sleep quality with temperature control enabled. Measured sleep time, time awake during the night and heart-rate measures did not significantly improve.

Budget for the plan as well as the hardware. Eight Sleep's current help page states a 12-month Autopilot commitment with a new Pod purchase. After the paid plan ends, manual temperature control remains, but scheduling, automatic adjustments and sleep reports are among the features lost. Check current price, renewal, trial and warranty terms for the exact purchase.

Cooling relief and comfort tradeoffs
Some hot sleepers report relief after bedding changes fell short. One owner described still overheating after trying different mattresses, sheets and duvets, then sleeping better with the Pod. Their later reply said the improvement continued.

The second incident led to replacement-cost questions. These older-model reports do not establish a failure rate for current hardware.
