An eye exam checks how well you see and looks for eye-health problems. People book for blur, a prescription update or a routine check; clear vision alone does not show that the eyes are healthy.

What happens at an eye exam
Refraction finds the lens power. The clinician compares lenses using measurements and your answers about which looks clearer. This measures correction for focusing problems. A driving or school chart is a screening; neither it nor refraction replaces the full examination.
American Optometric AssociationEye-health checks examine more than sharpness. The visit may check pupils, eye movement, side vision and pressure. Dilating drops widen the pupil so the clinician can inspect the retina and other structures inside the eye. The tests depend on your needs.

What the visit can help with
A suitable correction can make vision clearer. Glasses or contacts can correct refractive blur, including distance problems, astigmatism and age-related difficulty seeing up close. An exam helps identify the problem before assuming that stronger lenses are the answer.

Being able to drive can delay the booking. People describe delaying an exam while laptop squinting becomes the workaround. They bring current glasses and put visits on the calendar. Reported 1–2-year habits change for symptoms or arranged follow-up; they are not personal schedules.

The phoropter holds the trial lenses. Say which view is clearer. That choice is the refraction. The optometry page also describes a retinoscope, or an automatic estimate, before the fine-tuning. Pupils, side vision, and eye movement are checked in the same stretch. Pressure is a puff of air or a tip at the eye. A slit lamp lights the lids, cornea, iris, and lens.
- Widening drops are the part that changes the rest of the day. The optometry page says they are often used, and that the exact tests follow the symptoms and the clinician's judgment. The eye institute page says the wider pupil is how diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration are looked for. Drops that only stop the eye from changing focus during refraction are a different step. At the end, the findings are explained. A prescription is written if a refractive error is there. Book the next visit before leaving, which is what that eye institute page describes.
