In brief

Protein coffee, sometimes called proffee, combines coffee with protein powder or a protein-containing drink.

The common picture
About 20–30 g protein in a coffeeThe examples use powder or a protein-containing drink, hot or iced.
Morning when a plate feels like too muchGLP-1 and busy-desk origin stories.
Fairlife / whey / casein all show upThey pick what their gut allows.
Then maybe real food laterThe latte is the on-ramp.
Not a 10-ingredient recipeCinnamon is optional. A kitchen project is how it dies.
Iced mixes easier for manyHot clumps are the meme fail.
Protein-breakfast is still a plateThis card is the coffee workaround.

People discuss using an existing coffee routine when a breakfast plate feels difficult or inconvenient. Hot versus iced mixing, clumps, taste and dairy preferences shape the versions they describe.

Good to know. It is a backup breakfast, not a personality. A real meal still counts.

What people say

  • The job: get protein in when breakfast is a barrier.
  • Proffee is the 2024–26 name on TikTok and r/loseit.
  • GLP-1 mornings: appetite is gone; a drink is easier than eggs. See glp1-keep-muscle for the week.
  • Why it stays: coffee was already happening. The scoop hitchhikes.
  • Why it fails: chalk sludge, then they skip protein until dinner.
  • Not a personality. A Greek yogurt is still allowed.
  • r/Fitness treats it as a hack, not a meal plan.
  • Fairlife in coffee is a cousin (already-liquid protein). Same job.
  • If they hate dairy: a non-dairy powder they actually drink. Unused bags do not count.
  • Creatine can go in the same mug in some logs. Separate habit card.

How people do it

  • Coffee first, then powder — or blender with cold coffee if hot clumps.
  • One scoop they will finish.
  • Sip, do not chug a brick.
  • Eat something with texture later if that is the only protein.
  • They keep a shaker at work so the 7 a.m. fail is not the whole day.
  • They do not add four syrups and call it a cut.
  • If GLP-1 nausea: smaller sip, colder, or they skip coffee and do yogurt.
  • They still lift if muscle is the reason. A latte does not replace the session.
  • Travel: a shaker and a baggie beats a hotel omelette argument.

Amounts people use

  • Scoop talk: about 20–30 g protein in the drink.
  • Coffee: whatever they already drink — 1 cup is enough.
  • Frequency: most weekday mornings in kept logs.
  • Cost: powder they already bought for the gym.
  • If the drink is 80 g because they dumped two scoops: that is a shake. Fine. Still not the only meal.
  • Sugar bombs: flavored creamers can steal the point.
  • Protein-target still owns the day’s grams.

How people keep it

  • A tub next to the kettle.
  • Iced recipe as backup for clump days.
  • They stop if it wrecks their stomach or their coffee joy.
  • A plate breakfast 2–3 days so they do not forget how to eat.
  • On a GLP: they count this toward the day’s protein, not as extra magic.
  • If they cannot finish it, they downsize the scoop.

How it may feel

  • First hot mix: clumpy, annoyed. They learn iced or a blender.
  • When it works: breakfast happened in 4 minutes.
  • GI: dairy whey on an empty GLP stomach is a known complaint.
  • If it replaces all food: energy dips; they needed lunch.
  • Caffeine still exists. Theanine people add it — Research card.
  • They get bored: they rotate a yogurt week.

How long

  • As long as mornings are the bottleneck.
  • Not a forever identity.
  • They use it more on busy or low-appetite months.
  • They drop it when they like breakfast again.

The longer notes

  • Why mornings: a plate is a decision. Coffee is already a decision they made. Hitching a scoop to coffee is how busy people and low-appetite people (including GLP-1 diaries) get 20–30 g in without a skillet. It is not superior to eggs. It is easier on a Tuesday.
  • Mix science is folklore: hot coffee plus cheap whey is a clump. Iced, blender, or a already-liquid protein (Fairlife-style) is how the hack survives. Flavored creamers can turn it into dessert. The job is protein, not a 70 g sugar latte with a scoop for cover.
  • GLP-1 overlap: glp1-keep-muscle is protein + lifting while the shot is quieting food. Protein-coffee is one vehicle. If they cannot keep the drink down, they shrink it or they use yogurt. They do not treat nausea as a failure of will. Compound notes stay on STUDresearch.
  • The day’s grams: protein-target still owns the number. A 25 g coffee plus nothing else is a start, not a day. Protein-everywhere is bars and drinks later. Protein-breakfast is the plate. This card is only the mug.
  • Gut: whey on an empty stomach is a known complaint. They switch powder, add a cracker, or they drop the hack. Lactose stories belong to the person, not a forum brand war.
  • Gym: the drink does not replace a lift. Creatine can share the mug if they already scoop creatine. Last-coffee still owns the cutoff hour — a 9 p.m. proffee is just late caffeine.
  • Kept version: tub by the kettle, one scoop they finish, iced backup, a real meal later, stop if it wrecks the stomach or they are using it to avoid all food.
  • Who it is for: weekday mornings, GLP quiet appetite, hotel rooms, people who will drink coffee but will not cook.
  • Who it is not for: anyone using a sweet coffee as their only calorie on a hard cut while still trying to lift heavy. Anyone whose gut says dairy whey is a no and they keep forcing it. Anyone replacing lunch and dinner with two more lattes.
  • Mix notes people actually keep: blend iced, or whisk powder into a little cold milk then add coffee, or use a ready-to-drink protein and skip the scoop. Hot dump-and-shake is the fail video. If it still tastes like chalk they pick a different powder instead of adding syrup until it is dessert.
  • Week kept: one scoop most weekdays, a plate breakfast on two slower days so they remember food, lift days still have a real meal after. That is the whole hack. If the drink is the only calorie before a hard session they still eat after the lift. The mug is a hitchhike on coffee, not a meal-replacement religion and not a second identity. Travel days get a shaker in the bag so the hotel omelette argument does not eat the morning. It stays small.
  • Protein-breakfast is the plate. This is the drink when the plate loses.
  • Protein-target is the day’s number.
  • GLP-1 keep muscle is protein + lifting while appetite is quiet.
  • Creatine-habit can share the mug.
  • Not nutrition advice. If they cannot eat, a clinician, not a thicker latte.

Good to know

  • Clumps are a technique fail, not a moral.
  • A 70 g sugar coffee is not this card.
  • Nausea / vomiting on a GLP: smaller or skip.
  • This is not a meal-replacement religion.
  • Kidney questions belong with a clinician, not a scoop.
Earlier wording (updated)
  • One scoop in coffee Hot or iced. Blender bottle or actual blender.
