An occlusive slows moisture loss. The word means a product that helps hold water in the skin. Petroleum jelly traps existing moisture; its main job is retention rather than adding water.

On an American Academy of Dermatology dry-skin page last updated November 4, 2022, dermatologist Caroline Robinson says petroleum jelly traps existing moisture, on skin damp from bathing or on top of a lotion or cream. The Academy moisturizer page last updated January 25, 2022 calls an ointment the thickest moisturizer and says it traps water so the water does not evaporate. The jelly does not add water the way a serum does, and it is not an acne drug.
      • The jar is not one formula. A DailyMed label for Aquaphor Healing Ointment, updated December 15, 2025, lists petrolatum at 41 percent plus mineral oil, ceresin, lanolin alcohol, panthenol, glycerin, and bisabolol. A DailyMed label updated June 19, 2026, for a white-petrolatum skin protectant sold as comparable to Vaseline and not made by Unilever, lists white petrolatum USP at 100 percent and no inactive ingredients. The Unilever Vaseline Pure label on DailyMed, updated April 25, 2012, also lists white petrolatum USP at 100 percent. That 2012 entry says the FDA has not evaluated whether the product complies. The directions on these labels are to apply as needed. That is a skin protectant direction, not a nightly face protocol.
      • The Academy petroleum-jelly page says ointments are more effective and less irritating than lotions for dry skin, including lips and eyelids, and that the jelly goes on while the skin is damp. A small amount is the eyelid amount on that page. The same page says to avoid petroleum jelly on the face if the skin is acne-prone, because this may cause breakouts in some people. Overnight slugging is that seal. It is not a peel, and it is not tretinoin or another active medicine.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment, on the December 15, 2025 label, is 41 percent petrolatum plus the other ingredients above, including lanolin alcohol. Pick the jar on purpose. Take a small amount with a clean finger instead of wiping the face across the opening. Both the June 19, 2026 petrolatum label and the Aquaphor label say not to get the product in the eyes.
      • Wash first. Use a gentle cleanser without alcohol, lukewarm water, and the fingertips, and do not scrub. Leave the skin damp. Robinson's line on the November 4, 2022 page is the order: damp skin, or a lotion or cream, then petroleum jelly. If a plain moisturizer is part of the night, it goes on the damp skin. The jelly is last. The petroleum-jelly page says to apply it when the skin is damp, including a small amount on dry eyelids.
      • Keep the coat thin and place it on dry skin. The January 25, 2022 moisturizer page says that for some people too much moisturizer clogs pores and leads to acne, and it describes moisturizing dry spots while skipping an oily center. The petroleum-jelly page tells acne-prone skin to skip the face. Do not cover broken-out skin and treat that as the same step as a dry eyelid. Use a pillowcase that can be washed, because the layer is greasy. Neither drug label gives a gram weight.
      • A normal night is one wash, an optional plain moisturizer, and a thin coat on the dry patches. Sleep. In the morning, wash the layer off with the same gentle cleanser. Do not put a new acid or retinoid under the seal on that same night. One change at a time is the only way to tell which layer did what. If the skin stings or new breakouts appear, stop the occlusive. A greasy morning, a less tight feeling, and breakouts are reports in the community notes, not a result this page can assign.

If the product is swallowed, those labels say to get medical help or contact a poison center. No page opened here gives a gram dose or a set number of nights.       • A peel, a prescription retinoid plan, or a compound note is a different job. The official direction on the labels is a skin protectant applied as needed. Slugging is the habit of using that protectant as an overnight last layer on dry skin, and leaving acne-prone facial skin out of it.
