Love Endures beyond Partial Knowledge and Gifts
The partial will pass; love is what remains when seeing is complete.
Love never ends. Prophecies, tongues, and knowledge will be brought to an end because they belong to the partial present. When the complete comes, the partial passes away. Childhood speech, thought, and reasoning give way to adulthood. Now we see in a mirror dimly, then face to face; now we know in part, then we shall know fully, even as we have been fully known.
Faith, hope, and love abide, these three, and the greatest of these is love. The contrast is present partial knowing versus future face-to-face knowing, not a calendar for when congregational gifts must stop. This unit does not date a cessation of gifts and does not prove continuationist or cessationist systems. It relativizes the manifestations Corinth was ranking, so that love—not a finished catalog of insights—measures maturity until the seeing is whole.
