Status Lawsuits Expose Mutual Defeat and Defrauding
Winning a sibling in court can still be defeat.
When one of them has a grievance against another, they are going to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints. Paul is stunned that they cannot find anyone wise enough to decide between brothers. To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be defrauded?
But they themselves wrong and defraud, and they do this to brothers and sisters. The rebuke lands on status litigation and on members who are doing the harm, not on people who need civil protection. This unit does not forbid reporting abuse, assault, fraud, exploitation, or other crimes to the authorities. It shames a church that uses public courts as a way to win against its own while some are actively cheating the family.
How this should shape us
Before you use a process designed to make a fellow believer lose, ask whether the aim is repair or victory. Seek wise help inside the community when the harm is the kind a family should face. If someone is in danger or a crime has been done, using lawful protection is not the sin this paragraph names.
