Love Governs Knowledge about Idols and the One God
Being known by God outranks being right about idols.
Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.
Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, they know that an idol has no real existence, and that there is no God but one. Many so-called gods and lords exist in heaven and on earth, yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. That confession is true. 'An idol is nothing' does not mean another person's trauma, conscience, family pressure, Jewish food discipline, or social vulnerability is imaginary. Love governs the knowledge.
How this should shape us
You can be right about God and still be inflated in the room. Let being known by God make you careful with people whose histories you do not carry. Contempt for someone else's scruple is not better theology.
