1 John 5:13–17
Assured Life Prays within God's Will and Responds to Sin
The letter is written so you may know you have life, then pray inside God's will.
These things are written to those who believe in the name of the Son of God, that they may know they have eternal life. Confidence before God means we ask according to his will, and he hears us. That hearing supports confidence that the requests are received. If anyone sees a brother or sister sinning a sin not unto death, they should pray, and God will give life. There is a sin unto death; the writer does not command prayer for that, yet also does not issue a ban. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not unto death.
The prayer promise does not guarantee healing, wealth, marriage, a verdict, or any request regardless of God's will. Sin unto death is not defined. It must not be used to diagnose suicide, addiction, church-leaving, mental illness, or a modern opponent as beyond prayer or mercy. Assurance may not be weaponized against a questioning person or used to excuse unrepented harm. The safest reading keeps the obscurity and keeps the ordinary call to concerned prayer.
How this should shape us
Pray for people who are failing, seek facts, and intervene in ways that are safe and wanted. Refer serious harm and illness to qualified help. Do not pronounce an unreviewable sentence that someone has committed the sin unto death. Let 'according to his will' keep confidence from becoming entitlement.
