Silvanus Carries a Brief Witness to True Grace and Peace
Silvanus carries a brief witness: this is the true grace; stand in it
Through Silvanus, a faithful brother as Peter regards him, he has written briefly to exhort and to testify that this is the true grace of God: stand firm in it. 'Through Silvanus' does not by itself solve authorship, Greek style, secretary, or courier questions. What the closing does say is enough: the letter's burden is grace, and the readers are to remain in it.
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with them, sends greetings, and so does Mark, his son. 'Babylon' names imperial exile; it is not a sneer at Jewish neighbors or a slur against a people. Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all who are in Christ. The last weather of the letter is affection without predation and peace located in Christ rather than in Rome's approval.
How this should shape us
Stand firm in the grace this letter actually described: living hope, honorable public life, and no blessing on harm. Send a real greeting this week—a message, a visit, a peace that is more than a slogan—and remember that a scattered modern church is still one household under Christ, not a people defined against Jews or against the empire's favorites.
