Six hundred remain as raiders spread out
Samuel leaves, and Saul counts about six hundred
Samuel arises and goes up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbers the people present with him, about six hundred men. Saul, Jonathan, and the people with them abide in Gibeah of Benjamin, while the Philistines encamp in Michmash. The shrinking Israelite position is explicit. Place identifications and the relation of forces can be reconstructed only provisionally.
Three companies of spoilers spread out
Spoilers come out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one turns unto the way of Ophrah, unto the land of Shual; another unto the way of Beth-horon; another unto the way of the border that looks to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. 'Spoilers' are raiding parties leaving the Philistine camp. Brief military movements do not reduce threatened communities to map points, and raiding is not an admirable measure of strength.

Count who is actually left, and name raids as raids on inhabited places. Do not aestheticize a shrinking force or treat plunder routes as a leadership map.
