Philistine strength scatters Israel
Philistia gathers a force that looks like sand
The Philistines gather themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude. They come up and pitch in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven. The chariot number differs among textual witnesses and is likely textually difficult. The narrative's picture of severe imbalance is clearer than exact arithmetic.
Israel hides, flees the Jordan, and trembles at Gilgal
When the men of Israel see that they are in a strait, for the people are distressed, they hide themselves in caves, thickets, rocks, high places, and pits. 'In a strait' means pressed into grave danger. Some Hebrews go over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he is yet in Gilgal, and all the people follow him trembling.
Fear and hiding do not make civilians or soldiers cowardly. The force comparison does not justify dehumanizing Philistines.
How this should shape us
Tell panic as panic without shaming the people who hid. Do not inflate or flatten a disputed chariot count into propaganda, and do not treat the other army as less than human.
