Deacons and Women Are Tested for Trustworthy Service
Deacons and women likewise are tested, not displayed
Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They are to hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience and be tested first; then let them serve if they prove blameless. Speech and money sit at the center because entrusted service lives or dies by trust. Household faithfulness is examined too, as evidence, not as a warrant to dominate a home.
Women likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Greek does not say their wives. Responsible readings include women deacons, women serving alongside deacons, and deacons' wives. The debate must stay visible. The qualifications are not decoration, and women are not accessories to male leaders. Those who serve well gain a good standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. Standing here is credibility in Christ, not a purchased rank.
How this should shape us
Use the same integrity bar for every person who handles words, money, or care. Name women's actual work instead of folding it into a husband's resume, and do not appoint on enthusiasm or patronage.
