Acts 2:22–2:36
Peter proclaims Jesus' death, resurrection, and lordship
Peter tells Israelites that God raised the Jesus they crucified
The address is to men of Israel. Jesus of Nazareth is a man approved by God through mighty works, wonders, and signs in their midst. He was delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, and they, by wicked hands, crucified and slew him. Divine purpose and human responsibility sit together. The speech does not cancel either, and it does not transfer this Jerusalem confrontation into collective guilt against Jewish people then or now.
David's psalm is read as Messiah's voice: God would not leave his soul in hell or let the Holy One see corruption. David died and was buried; his sepulchre is with them. God raised Jesus, of which the apostles are witnesses, and exalted him to the right hand, pouring out the Spirit they now see and hear. Let all the house of Israel know that God has made this Jesus, whom they crucified, both Lord and Christ.
This is an intra-Jewish argument about Israel's Messiah
Peter speaks as an Israelite to Israelites about Jesus, David, and the God of their Scriptures. Human agents in Jerusalem are held to account. That accountability is not a racial verdict, not a Christian warrant for contempt, and not a story in which Jews as a people replace Rome, Pilate, or later Gentile violence.
How this should shape us
Proclaim Jesus' death, resurrection, and lordship without turning Peter's intra-Jewish charge into blame of Jewish people. Hold purpose and responsibility together, and refuse any preaching that needs a guilty ethnicity to make the cross work.
