Paul negotiates permission to address the crowd
Greek speech, a mistaken insurgent, and permission to address the crowd
As Paul is brought into the barracks, he asks in Greek for leave to speak. The tribune is surprised and asks whether he is not the Egyptian who recently stirred a revolt and led four thousand assassins into the wilderness. Paul identifies himself as a Jew from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of a notable city, and asks to speak to the people. Given license, he stands on the stairs and, when silence falls, addresses them in the Hebrew language.
The commander's identification belongs to recent unrest and profiling. The language label can mean the local Semitic speech. Multilingual skill and civic identity help Paul negotiate power. They are not a measure of human worth, and they are not protections every prisoner has.
How this should shape us
Use language and legal knowledge to seek a hearing without assuming eloquence guarantees justice. Do not treat education, citizenship, or accent as worth, and do not baptize ethnic profiling because a commander is confused.
