Acts 24:1–24:9
Tertullus frames Paul as a civic and temple threat
Flattery and public-order language try to make a temple dispute into sedition
After five days the high priest Ananias comes down with elders and an orator, Tertullus. Tertullus flatters Felix for peace and reforms, then accuses Paul of being a pestilent fellow, a mover of sedition among Jews throughout the world, a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes, and one who tried to profane the temple. He claims they would have judged him according to their law if Lysias had not taken him with great violence. The accompanying Judeans assent.
The prosecution translates religious conflict into provincial public-order charges. "Sect of the Nazarenes" is a hostile classification, not a full identity. The prosecutor's Rome is a flattered peace, not a proven case, and a whole people is not identical with this brief.
How this should shape us
Separate polished accusation from verified evidence. Do not let flattery or public-order language replace a fair hearing, and do not treat an advocate's hostility as the measure of a whole people.
