Acts 26:1–26:8
Paul appeals to Agrippa's Jewish knowledge and resurrection hope
A Pharisee's hope is the promise made to the twelve tribes
Given permission, Paul stretches out his hand and counts himself fortunate to make his defense before Agrippa, who is familiar with Jewish customs and questions. All the Jews know his manner of life from youth among his nation and in Jerusalem, that he lived as a Pharisee according to the strictest party of their religion. He now stands judged for the hope of the promise God made to the fathers, the promise the twelve tribes hope to attain as they worship night and day. For this hope he is accused. Why is it judged incredible that God raises the dead?
The defense addresses a Herodian ruler who knows Jewish customs. "Twelve tribes" is covenant language, not a census. Disagreement is not treated as stupidity, and monarchy is not enlisted as theological authority. The hope remains Israel's promise, not a Gentile replacement story.
How this should shape us
Speak to a powerful hearer with respect and candor, connecting resurrection to Israel's promise rather than to flattery. Do not erase Jewish diversity, and do not treat dissent as irrational.
