Acts 27:1–27:8
Paul sails under guard through difficult winds
Courtesy on a prison ship still leaves prisoners under a centurion
When it is decided that they sail for Italy, Paul and other prisoners are delivered to Julius, a centurion of the Augustan Cohort. Aristarchus of Thessalonica is with them. They embark on an Adramyttian ship. At Sidon Julius treats Paul kindly and allows him to go to friends to be cared for. Contrary winds force a slow coastal route under Cyprus, then to Myra in Lycia, where they transfer to an Alexandrian ship for Italy. Making little headway, they sail under Crete off Salmone and reach Fair Havens near Lasea.
The first-person itinerary and nautical detail support source and eyewitness debates without conclusively identifying authorship. Adverse winds, not a coded itinerary, force the slow run. Kindness from Julius does not cancel imperial custody, and it does not vindicate empire.
How this should shape us
Respect weather, seamanship, and the limits of a body in transit. Accompany people through hard travel without romanticizing detention or treating a humane officer as proof that the system is just.
