The storm destroys control but not hope

A northeaster takes the ship; a promise takes the lives, not the cargo

When a south wind blows gently, they suppose they have obtained their purpose and sail close along Crete. Soon a violent wind, the northeaster, strikes. The ship cannot face it and is driven. Under the lee of Cauda they barely secure the boat, undergird the ship, and, fearing the Syrtis shallows, lower the gear and drift. The next day they jettison cargo; the third day, the tackle. Neither sun nor stars appear for many days. All hope of being saved is at last abandoned. After long abstinence Paul stands up: they should have listened and not sailed from Crete. Now he urges them to take heart. There will be no loss of life among them, but only of the ship. An angel of the God to whom he belongs and whom he worships stood by him that night, saying not to fear, for he must stand before Caesar, and God has granted him all who sail with him. They must run aground on some island.

Seamanship, despair, rebuke, and claimed revelation are mixed. The promise is survival of persons, not of vessel, schedule, or profit. It is not a prosperity guarantee, and it does not cancel the work still required of the crew.
