Acts 27:39–27:44
The ship breaks, and every person reaches land
A broken ship, a plan to kill prisoners, and a centurion who stops it
When day comes they do not recognize the land but notice a bay with a beach, intending if possible to run the ship ashore. They cut away anchors, loosen the rudder ropes, hoist the foresail, and make for the beach. Striking a reef where two seas meet, the bow sticks and the stern is broken by the surf. The soldiers plan to kill the prisoners lest any swim away and escape. The centurion, wishing to save Paul, keeps them from that purpose and orders those who can swim to jump overboard first, the rest on planks and pieces of the ship. All are brought safely to land.
Roman custodial fear explains the lethal plan without excusing it. Julius's intervention saves every prisoner, not only Paul. Reaching shore is not proof of superior faith, and cargo policy is not worth more than the people in the water. Survival is not a ranking of souls.
How this should shape us
Choose people over cargo and over a custody rule that would kill them to prevent escape. Use every practical means to bring everyone ashore, and do not read survival as a ranking of souls.
