The community addresses a neglected distribution

Greek-speaking widows are neglected, and the community appoints seven to the need

When the number of disciples is multiplied there arises a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows are neglected in the daily ministration. The conflict is an internal diaspora-language inequity among Jewish believers, not a Jewish-versus-Gentile dispute. The twelve call the multitude and say it is not reason that they should leave the word of God to serve tables. The community is to look out seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom they may appoint over this business. The twelve will give themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word.

The saying pleases the whole multitude. They choose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, who pray and lay hands on them. The word of God increases; the number of disciples multiplies in Jerusalem greatly, and a great company of the priests are obedient to the faith. The seven are appointed to a concrete neglected distribution. Later ministry, especially Stephen's and Philip's, will exceed a narrow job description. The scene does not freeze 'serving tables' as lesser work, and it does not turn Greek names into a ranking of holiness.

Complaint becomes structure so that neglected people are actually fed

The church does not spiritualize the widows away. It names the inequity, shares the choice, prays, and lays on hands. Priestly conversions show the word reaching Israel's temple servants without making priests villains or trophies.
