Acts 8:14–8:24
The apostles confirm Samaria and rebuke attempted purchase
Apostolic hands join Samaria, and money is refused as a way to buy the Spirit
The apostles at Jerusalem hear that Samaria has received the word of God and send Peter and John. The Samaritans have been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, yet the Holy Ghost has not yet fallen on any of them. The two pray, lay hands on them, and they receive the Holy Ghost. Simon sees that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Spirit is given and offers them money, asking for this power. Peter answers that the gift of God cannot be purchased, that Simon's heart is not right, that he is in the gall of bitterness and bond of iniquity, and that he must repent and pray. Simon asks them to pray that none of the spoken evils come upon him.
The delayed giving of the Spirit here visibly joins Samaria to Jerusalem's apostolic witness. Acts does not label this sequence the mandatory order for every conversion. Peter's rebuke treats the attempted purchase as a heart disease, not as a fundraising opportunity. Simon's request for prayer is recorded; the narrator does not close his inner story.

Refuse any attempt to buy spiritual authority, status, or gifts. Welcome people across old hostilities without turning one exceptional sequence in Acts into a mechanical test you can impose on every convert.
