Acts 8:4–8:8
Philip proclaims Christ in a Samaritan city
Scattered speech brings Christ, signs, and joy to Samaria
They that are scattered go every where preaching the word. Philip goes down to a city of Samaria and preaches Christ. The people give heed with one accord to the things he says, hearing and seeing the miracles. Unclean spirits come out of many, crying with a loud voice. Many taken with palsies, and that were lame, are healed. There is great joy in that city.
Samaritan-Jewish history makes this geography socially charged: a despised neighboring people hears the same Christ. The narrator reports extraordinary signs without turning Samaritans into a mission trophy or reducing their joy to a technique. Healing and exorcism here are singular mercies in the story. They are not a program against physicians, and they do not make every later city a copy of this one.
How this should shape us
Carry the word you actually have when you are displaced, and take neighboring people seriously as hearers, not as projects. Rejoice when a city is helped, without using reported signs to shame medical care or to demand the same spectacle from every congregation.
