Ecclesiastes 11:1-6

Act and Diversify Under Uncertainty

Cast thy bread, divide to seven, and keep sowing

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves. He that observes the wind shall not sow; he that regards the clouds shall not reap. Thou knowest not the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand. The counsel is generous action under uncertainty, not a market guarantee, not weather magic, and not a medical treatise on the womb.

How this should shape us

Give and sow without waiting for perfect conditions. Diversify care. Do not let watching the wind become your whole religion.

Teach it back

Explain Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 in your own words. Include its movement, one material uncertainty, and one harmful or reductive use the context rules out.

Where do careful interpreters disagree?

Best judgment: Trade, generosity, funerary practice, and agricultural readings of verse 1 persist; the unit's diversification and anti-paralysis movement is clearer than the exact first image.
