Ecclesiastes 5:1-7
Listen, Speak Carefully, and Fear God
Keep thy foot; let thy words be few
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God. Be more ready to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools. Be not rash with thy mouth; God is in heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few.
When thou vowest, defer not to pay; better not to vow than to vow and not pay. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin. Fear thou God. Many words and dreams are vanities. The unit is about reverence and kept speech, not a ban on prayer and not a license for religious leaders to extract vows.
How this should shape us
Go to worship ready to hear. Slow down promises, especially costly ones. Do not let a vow become a trap, and do not use 'fear God' to silence a question.
