Ecclesiastes 5:18-20

The Gift and Capacity to Enjoy

The gift is to eat and to take one's portion

It is good and comely to eat and to drink and to enjoy the good of all his labour all the days of his life, which God gives. Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

He shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answers him in the joy of his heart. Capacity to enjoy is itself given. It is not a technique, and it is not guaranteed by the size of the pile.

How this should shape us

When enjoyment is possible, receive it without guilt-theater. When it is not, do not accuse the person of failing a spiritual exercise.

Best judgment: The force of 'answereth,' the relation between wealth and divine gift, and whether the joy is distraction, response, or grace remain debated.
