Ecclesiastes 9:1-6
One Death and the Living's Limited Hope
One event to all, and the dead know not any thing
The righteous, the wise, and their works are in the hand of God. No man knows either love or hatred by all that is before them. All things come alike to all: one event to the righteous and to the wicked, to the clean and unclean, to the sacrificer and to him that sacrifices not.
This is an evil among all things: that there is one event unto all. The living know that they shall die; but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; the memory of them is forgotten. Their love, hatred, and envy is now perished. The living have a dog's advantage over a dead lion, he says, because they still know they will die. This is Qoheleth's under-the-sun limit, not a full doctrine of resurrection or a command to despise the dead.
How this should shape us
Use the time of the living. Do not read this as permission to forget the dead's dignity, and do not turn 'one event' into a claim that justice never matters.
