Exodus 28:31–43
Robe, Plate, Tunics, and Undergarments Guard Holy Service
A blue robe with pomegranates and bells
The robe of the ephod is all blue, with a bound opening so it does not tear. On its hem, pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet, with bells of gold between, round about. It is on Aaron to minister: his sound shall be heard when he goes in to the holy place and when he comes out, that he die not.
Holy crown, family garments, and linen to cover flesh
A plate of pure gold, engraved 'HOLINESS TO THE LORD' like a signet, is on a blue lace upon the mitre, on Aaron's forehead. He bears the iniquity of holy things; it is always on his forehead that they may be accepted. The coat of fine linen, mitre, and embroidered girdle are for Aaron; coats, girdles, and bonnets for his sons, for glory and beauty. They are clothed, anointed, consecrated. Linen breeches cover their nakedness from loins to thigh when they come near the altar; it is a statute, lest they bear iniquity and die.
Sound, forehead inscription, family clothing, and modest covering belong to lethal holiness. The bells are not a concert. The plate is not a slogan for any institution. Body covering here is about not dying in approach, not about shaming bodies in public.
How this should shape us
Let representative clothing tell the truth: whose iniquity is borne, whose names are missing, and whether the wearer can be heard going in and coming out. Do not use bells, gold plates, or underwear rules to humiliate people or to make a leader untouchable.

Where careful interpreters disagreeThe strongest options and their difficulties
Where do careful interpreters disagree?
Best judgment: Careful interpreters agree that the received text states the following: The ephod robe, bells and pomegranates, holy-name plate, tunics, headwear, sashes, and linen undergarments combine representation, beauty, modesty, and lethal holiness warnings. They disagree over source layers, date, historical recovery, archaeology, Hebrew details, ritual development, legal use, and canonical relationship in different proportions; this study treats the final form directly while marking those alternatives as probable or uncertain rather than settled fact.
