Holy Oil and Incense Are Not Private Products
A weighed formula for holy oil
Principal spices—pure myrrh five hundred shekels, cinnamon two hundred fifty, calamus two hundred fifty, cassia five hundred, and a hin of olive oil—are compounded after the art of the apothecary as holy anointing oil. With it Moses anoints the tent, ark, table, lampstand, incense altar, burnt-offering altar, laver, and Aaron and his sons, consecrating them most holy.
Oil and incense are not personal products
The oil is holy throughout generations. It is not poured on man's flesh as a common cosmetic, and they shall not make another like it. Whoever compounds the like, or puts it on a stranger, is cut off. Incense of stacte, onycha, galbanum, and frankincense, equal weight, is a pure holy confection, beaten small and placed before the testimony. They shall not make this composition for themselves to smell; whoever does is cut off.
Scent and touch mark holiness by restriction. Sacred smell is not a market, a personal signature, or a way to mark insiders against outsiders for profit. The stranger prohibition here is about misuse of sanctuary oil, not a warrant to withhold ordinary kindness.
How this should shape us
Keep holy recipes from becoming private brands. If a scent, oil, or logo is supposed to mean consecration, do not sell the copy, and do not anoint whom the community has not actually set apart.

They disagree over source layers, date, historical recovery, archaeology, Hebrew details, ritual development, legal use, and canonical relationship in different proportions; this study treats the final form directly while marking those alternatives as probable or uncertain rather than settled fact.
